desperate? if anything, it would've been a desperate atempt to please the fans to continue with what the fans were expecting of them. instead they went onto a new direction. pretty bold, i think. you should never criticise an artist for changing their style. its fine to dislike the new style of course, even if i don't agree with you on it.

I never criticised him for changing their style, I criticised the execution of it.

I gotta go with Aluktodolo on Opeth's change of style.

It's bold to defy fans' expectations yes, but it's a bland and uninspired sound that came out of it in response to the fans wanting them to do a Watershed pt. 2.

Imo, if they wanted to do a change of pace, Damnation could've been a good place for them to look at in terms of how they made that sound authentic to them, but still a lot different from what they've done thus far (not for an entire album at least). I'm not saying that they should've ripped Damnation off for three consecutive albums, but they could've taken a look at that album in terms of retaining their core sound while going off road stylistically.

But then again, some bands have a certain amount of good albums in them and then they just do whatever the fuck they feel like doing. Which is totally legit, just not a huge fan of Opeth's last decade plus

Agreed, damnation is opeth doing prog rock with their own identity. Their newer prog rock era is more of the identity of mikael's influences. The latest was a step in the right direction though

I feel like so many people for get that their favorite band is actually humans and not some mystical magical entity that pumps out sounds for them to enjoy.

It just makes perfect sense that a band whom is young and coming up and trying to make it and to be able to have music be their career is going to be putting 100% of that youthful energy into their music. 25 years down the road when they've got a family and kids and are slowing down physically you're just not going to get the same output whatsoever.

While there are plenty of bands who definitely are just phoning it in/watering down their music to appeal to more people/getting lazy I think in the cases of bands like Opeth and Mastodon they've just said what they needed to say and established themselves as artists a long time ago and they can p much do whatever the hell they want now and I can just listen to their golden age records and not be bothered. I think the latter output of both bands is just fine, I lean more towards actually listening to the newer Mastodon stuff but with both bands if I'm in the mood for them I'm probably listening to Watershed and previous or Crack the Skye and previous and that's just fine.

It's funny to me how upset people get over those bands and how much energy they spend trying to get them to go back to shit they were writing like 20 yrs ago.

Excluding natural born haters, people try to cling to the past, when they and their heroes were younger. While understandable, it is also sad. The day I get stuck in the past I'll be dead.

seems to me that most recent albums get a bad wrap there

also, it would be interesting and useful to know what kind of people actually use RYM. are they active listeners who actually wanna hear the new shit bands release or did they come there to put 5 stars on Master of Puppets or something like that

also do they even metal

Horn blowing, rowing sounds and northern fantasy madness. Probably the best description of Moonsorrow ever.
