Excellent review SandwichBubble, I only moderately liked Salad Days and a Mac Demarco instrumental album sounds like an absolute chore to sit through so I don't think I will

Yep, aside from a few seconds at the beginning of the first track.

Are you not entertained?

sure as hell probably not
nice timing to listen to this old dog again, tho. Probably his peak.

Was not aware of how popular this old dog was on here. I always thought of it as a small step down from 2 and salad days. Though, after listening to this, there's a good chance I'd like it more.

for me it's TOD>2>SD>>>the rest

If I had to

2>RockandRoll>Salad Days>TOD>HCTC>This

So basically chronological order, but swapping the first 2...

Rock and roll night club really does get no respect, by the way. That album deserves some re-evaluation.

maybe
for what i remember it's pretty ok-ish, but i can't really say the early 2010's is a time in my life i remember in much detail lol

If you've got 2 that high, I'd say it's worth a revisit. It's got jams.

I've already had two pretty different reactions to this based on two seperate listens. At first, completely surprised to see it pop up in my spotify, I threw it on and had a 'oh it's.... this' reaction. Then the next day I was really vibin to it in the park, just walking on a sunny afternoon, nowhere to be. So I guess I'm sitting somewhere in the middle of those, from feeling like these are half-finished nothings to just really nice sounds to walk in the park to.

Mac getting older and mellower, 'sinking into the background' as the review aptly puts it... has a bit of a strange effect on me. We're the same age, and those early lps were big parts of my early/mid20s...they were associated with fun and youth, smoking and partying. Listening to this kinda just makes me feel old, spent. But it's also kind of nice? From a recent article/interview I read it seems he's in a pretty good place. Quit drinking, smoking etc. But I do miss the vibrancy of those early lps. 'This Old Dog' was really a sweet spot, and more and more I think it's his best. I don't expect (or even want) him to make another '2', I don't think that's even possible, but something similar to TOD would be nice. I think that's possible.

anyway did not intend to make this comment so long lol

“That’s why making this record felt quite natural for me. It has its own weird little musical identity, and it doesn’t ‘slap’, it doesn’t have ‘bangers’. It just is what it is. I love music. I love recording music. I love listening to music. And I don’t need extra baggage to come with it. It’s a very simple pleasure of being alive. Maybe I’m waxing a little too poetic…”

I like Mac but how could an album with this title possibly be decent?

"Bob Rafelson’s 1970 film Five Easy Pieces ends with the hero, played by Jack Nicholson, hitching a ride on a northbound truck and disappearing into anonymity. Mac DeMarco is too larger-than-life to ever be anonymous, but this scene is a good starting place for considering his new Five Easy Hot Dogs. "

also, from 'nobody' on HCTC: "There's no turning back / To nobody / There's no second chance / No third degree"

people dont give mac enough credit around here lol. dig the aesthetic or not, his stuff has intention
