A weird one. Kind of emphatically a Molly Rankin album, which means the dip into shoegaze, instead of building structure, dais, and texture actively negates the possibility of such, burying anything that might direct one anywhere but Rankin's vocal performance. Which isn't particularly enthralling or delicious this time. Should clarify that this could be a major grower and I might unlock it further - I'm still working my way through the layers of Loveless and mbv all these years later - but at the moment I'm a skeptic

Like Antisocialites is so many leagues ahead of this (and most things granted)

Really? I thought this was quite a ways ahead of their other records

Yeah this also kinda seems like Alvvays souped up to me in a good way. “On steroids”

Need to really hear antisocialites but this is def better than the debut

blue rev > antisocialities > debut
all different and all good in their own way though

Yeah I need to jam that one again, I remember it was good but it didn't draw me back like this one. Maybe I'm biased because this was my entry point

@winesburgohio
found this one to be a massive grower. hooks take a while getting there but get lodged in yr head for good.
can kind of see what you're saying about Molly's vocals - they're less prominent and clear than on antisocialites. she's still on fire though imo. velveteen and tom verlaine are two of her best performances so far

@fogza
I'd give it another chance, yeah. it's a bit more straight-up indie pop (and does sound kinda twee after this) but it's really lovely

yeah i'm actually jamming it now after this conversation, need to get more of a handle on their older material before i see them. i did like it alot, i just don't think it their first two have the depth of this album.

btw izakaya, where does the username come from? reminds me of a isiZulu word

Album Rating: 4.5
fair this one is my favourite by far as well. the debut was acclaimed but I found it quite dificult to get into after listening to antisocialites first
and an izakaya is a kind of japanese bar. no particular relevance other than that I went to a couple in London around when I made this account and thought it was a cool word lol

"and an izakaya is a kind of japanese bar. "
lol ok i totally misinterpreted where that came from.

izakaya is a sick word yeah. I like the idea that an izakaya comes with its own form of drink-snacking too

"Like Antisocialites is so many leagues ahead of this"
this is a major grower and i enjoyed one blissful idiot day of entertaining this same take and then things changed
tbh i dig most songs on Antisocialites individually but struggle to get through them back to back without that plain jane songwriting baring its threads offputtingly. this is far more thoughtfully (if densely) constructed and easily the stronger record
