to me the album feels like a conscious effort to trim off the fat, stop the excesses of earlier records and focus on writing killer hooks. i can see why the production choices/sonic qualities of the record and cedric's vocals taking centre stage would piss people off, as i had the same feelings initially. but this thing weaseled its way into my brain and i think the songs, simple as they are, are just amazing throughout...

Implying their best albums were bad.

They just stopped writing what they used to write. It's not that deep lol

love deloused, but all the other records can get excessive with the jamming and progressive/meandering passages. just my opionion, ya know.

yes, effortless shift in direction, no problem for any band. what are you even saying

Need to listen to this again because I don’t remember my first spin very well. I don’t think I had that problem with their last two tho and those are a couple of my favorites

Well, yeah, effortless in the sense that they no longer make an effort to write prog music. You see, trimming the fat kind of implies that there's some stylistic continuity between this and the albums preceding it. Which isn't true.

This is bad.

Well they were heading towards this style well before they broke up, so, yeah. Noct was pretty heavy on pop elements and keeping things… pithy, shall we say. This just goes all in on the idea.

There absolutely is, though. Octahedron and Noct were stripped down and simplified and less chaotic compared to the first four albums. This album feels like a continuation of that trend. And I hear quite a few things echoing the DNA of past TMV on this album, just presented in a different, more straightforward manner.

Octa and Noct actually sounded like TMV, even though those albums weren't anywhere near as chaotic as their first four records.

Maybe this has already been discussed but their setlist right now? Holy shit. 1 or 2 songs from this and the rest is almost exclusively Deloused and Frances. They were amazing at Boston

Rightfully so.

No, it doesn't. It just sounds like a generic pop group with Cedric on vocals.

I’m curious if there’s an example of a generic pop group out there that sounds like this?

Generic pop group? No. Classic/dad rock? Sure
