After an initial listen this is definitely something I will be coming back to by the end of the day

After someone mentioned that the lyrics are reddit r/atheism tier, and reading the lyrics, it's absolutely true. The album is tight, but I can't take the lyrics seriously.

"The album has been sinking in quite nicely". Nice Notrap. It's one to keep coming back to.
Idc about the lyrics either. Never really do tbh

Lyrics always fall to the wayside for me, especially in the more extreme edges of the music I listen to on a regular basis. If I wanted to focus on lyrics I'd throw on some Nick Cave or Drones or Springsteen or something

This is bloody great, particularly back half of the record. Have been waiting for an oblivion for the new Ne Obliviscaris, this will fill in just nicely in the interim. Picked up the record off bandcamp.

Only 4 tracks in and this already feels like kind of a big deal…

Gonna have to agree with the guy slamming on this "death metal" record. Honestly felt like a pop album a lot of the time
|
| |
^ I mean can't you make that very same case about basically all 2000's melodeath?
To these ears this is not anymore "poppy" than stuff Dark Tranquillity, Insomnium, Be'lakor...put out (not a bash because I actually love those bands)

DT doesn't have any of these soft interludes that goes on for waaaaaaay too long and almost makes it feel like a different album. Insomnium and Be'lakor might have them, but DT don't. And they're melodeath bands too, so not sure why that comparison comes up. Melodeath definitely has poppy moments, but this is supposed to be progressive death metal?
|
| |
I kinda see this band more as a melodeath band than a "progressive death metal" band tbh. The core sound of this band doesn't feel all that different from for instance a band like Be'lakor.

Yeah I can see that. Closest band I'd compare them to would probably be NeO. And I don't really see NeO as prog-death either. It's a strange tag
|
| |
Yeah it's a weird tag for sure.
Personally whenever the sound of a band gets labelled as "prog-death" it doesn't really feel like "death metal" anymore. "Death metal" is more of a vibe imo and whenever it doesn't really feel dark or dank or warped or brutal or vile or obnoxious etc...etc...and it becomes more "sprawling" or "melodic" it starts to feel more like just "prog" or "melodic metal" to me as opposed to "death metal".
Again...not a gripe because I can dig the hell out of most well known bands labeled as such (I'm not hard to please when it comes to stuff like that).

Agreed. I can love both genres but it just gets unnecessarily confusing in cases like this
