The Cure are mentioned a whole lot from what I see. I've heard Death Cab, Smashing Pumpkins, Conor Oberst and loads more great musicians cite them as a huge influence. Tim Burton recently said he wants to direct a film with them (doing the soundtrack, presumably) and Robert Smith is kind of the posterchild of Goth. Most of my friends have at least heard of them, my Dad used to be a huge fan of them, and tons and tons of chicks want to bang Smith. They've had massive impact, really. On Sputnik, they aren't given huge attention like, say Brand New or Radiohead, but I expect that's because Sputnik is more focused on modern great music (post-90s bands), while giving a nod to the older great music.

Also, Disintegration is easily the best thing ever, for me. When I first heard it, it was like... I'd heard other bands who had captured elements of what I really like in music, but this album was just IT. The mood at atmosphere of it. Man, I wanna bum this. In a heterosexual way.
