His scream makes me genuinely concerned and gives me anxiety listening to this

Is that for me? You should try some/all of Notrap's metal reviews. Guy has really hit a stride lately.

The staff and contributor hyperlink is down the bottom of the page there. For the regular users, maybe a bookmark system? I don't know about that one.

At first I thought this album was painfully average, like I didn'tget what all the fuzz was about. But after trying again it's taken me this long to agree that "yes, this is actually really solid". Is that even normal or has anyone had a similar experience with another record?

That's what he said?

Musically the coolest thing Matt has done, but sadly the mix is a bit off and the screams really sound grating, and not in a cool, 'black metal' way...

This will feature in my EOY list. Such an accomplished prog metal album

Arguing whether or not it's pure black metal, as if it is a flaw, is the most black metal debate I've had in a while. Lol. It was marketed as a Black-ish album, yes. And it *is*, the very core of the ideas showcased here are stuff that would never be released under Trivium, can't wrap my head around the contrary. So yeah, I think you end up complaining more over expectations, rather than what Rashomon is, which is a very fresh look on blackened death metal, in my humble opinion. I can't argue against some flaws in the execution or the quality of the screams, but that's about it

More interesting than anything trivium has ever done agreed

Tbh I have to relisten to this. Didn't feel like a really memorable listen. Buut Akumu absolutely slaps. Nergal sounds frantic in there, makes it all the more intimidating. And I totally like some other songs in there too.

It's a pretty ok cool thing. Not blown away by it, but I'd be interested in hearing where he went next with this.
