Gah, even with a gushing Atari review I was sceptical how much I'd like this given how much I didn't love her debut (will return). But this is absolutely gorgeous, yeah, and totally entrancing. Love how steady and repetitive some of the instrumentals are.

Dude who helped produce this also produced songs by Lenker, and that totally makes sense.

Amazing album, see her live if you can

@Blush, ooh, didn't catch that before but agreed that definitely fits!
loving that 4 ;) you having a hard time picking a favorite song or are certain ones cutting you to the core more than others?

agree with a bunch of takes in the thread. like the debut, she's still finding her footing and experimenting with styles (the rock stuff is very welcome). I enjoy her voice and she's a good lyricist, but there isn't enough that stands out from the singer/songwriter crowd. great writeup
two listens in and not super into it. i'll return to "tap" and "happy accident"

someone needs to make a sad girl starter pack
- lower case song titles
- every song is reverbed to shit
- loves phoebe bridgers but thinks trespassers william is a 19th century general
- substance abuse references
- album cover with filtered selfie
- sounds like she smells like cat piss

just realised tomberlin is her surname, my theory is ruined
and youre missing the air of 'too cool for sincerity' scoot, although maybe thats a slightly more zoomerish brand

@johnny not true there aren't enough strings or overblown climaxes
also this is def better than the debut just revisited (:

I keep wanting other tracks to click with me to the same degree as “Stoned”/“Happy Accident,” especially since it’s clear that those are elevated by context (both for their being unique as electric songs in an otherwise acoustic album and their being sequenced together in a position that makes them the obvious climax of the album), and I generally do like the rest of this (“Born Again Runner” and “Sunstruck” being solid highlights among the acoustic songs), but I can’t help but think that without those I really wouldn’t be that drawn to return to this.

'you having a hard time picking a favorite song or are certain ones cutting you to the core more than others?'
Not great at distinguishing the songs. I prefer the first half to the latter but that'll change (latter seems more interesting). That said, Tap!!! Which I love your description of btw. The way her way her voice is manipulated(?) and blends in with w/e instrument that is at the end of every verse gets me.

YES I could listen to "Tap" forever. I am surprised nobody seems to be singling out "Memory".. that track does so much with so little and I love how powerful but subtle the piano melody is
@Boney, ah that's a shame but I'm glad you dug a couple tracks at least ;)
@neeks, right on! I love the opening track on the debut and it has several great moments (have it rated a 4) but this one just blew me away and felt a much stronger connection

Agreed with you there, the opener and "I'm Not Scared" are essential, but this is top-to-bottom great (:
And yes Memory is a standout for me too!!
