Don’t get me wrong, I love Show Pony, I think it’s just the least exciting of any his releases. I think it was a clear transition into the sound that he found here

He is not, imo the people who say he sounds like post-punk just don’t really know what 80s/90s country sounded like. And/or if there is a tiny bit of post-punk it’s more aligned with the milder gothic country influence on this first album.
