Watching them in interviews and play these songs live owns, they look like they're having so much fun. Hearing Roland say he couldn't have done this without Curt also nearly put me to tears lol

Still need to check this out but the t/t is probably one of my all-time favorite TfF songs.

"Best album since Big Chair"
i like this album a decent amount but strong, STRONG disagree there, buddy
only convo I'm willing to have regarding what it's better/worse than is Happy Ending (which tbh I still kinda think has the higher highs, outside of this one's title track)
also, bonus tracks for this one are essential, imo. Shame is one of my favorite tracks they've done this century

"Hearing Roland say he couldn't have done this without Curt also nearly put me to tears lol"
it's sweet on one hand but on the other hand the implied dismissal of Elemental, Raoul, & the BEAST of a record that is his first & only official solo effort Tomcats is a bit disheartening, 'cause all 3 of those are fucking excellent. & sorry Curt but "Fish Out of Water" is & always will be a top TFF track of all time for me.

Shame is the best song from these sessions I agree with that much
idk if Roland was dismissing those albums lol he's just saying he couldn't have continued as a solo artist into his 60s and reconnecting with Curt revitalised him a bit? I mean they seem to have split songwriting fairly equally for the first time ever here

Ya I took it as how Rowan described, this was clearly a tough album for Roland considering the circumstances around his wife passing.
And funny you mention Fish Out of Water, cause Curt recently said he gets a kick out of it nowadays lol he considers it one of his favorite songs without him. He mentions it here: https://www.vulture.com/2022/02/interview-curt-smith-on-tears-for-fears-and-roland-orzabal.html

The reasons for the muted reception this has gotten are kinda too obvious to outline but yeah it's as good as anything any hitmaker has made four decades out from their salad days

Okay yeah, this is their best since Elemental. Rivers of Mercy is insane.

Rivers of Mercy is so gorgeous yeah
That opening verse is also really understatedly sad in a way I adore, I've actually gotten a little choked up listening to it one or twice

is this actually good

It is (mostly) neither a saggy retread of their past glories nor a misguided effort to seem hip to the kids!
Idk how much you specifically will get out of it, but I do think you'd be hard-pressed to find another recent album from a big 80s act that sounds less like a contractual obligation

What’s the vibe? Is it similar at all to their quintessential work?

its a bit more muted like there's no Shout type bangers but it's a really lovely and well written album. lot of emotion too

Ehhhhh, at least somewhat? It's maybe a bit more power pop in places but it definitely isn't afraid to bust out those DX-7s
