opinion: has all the right components for cool blackgaze but doesnt do anything memorable with them. like, the songwriting is the weakest link

Thought you'd love this budg.

At some point I thought the shortest tracks worked better, but I'm having an affair with Mono No Aware now, meaning she can pull off a 9 minute track and that's gotta account for decent songwriting skills, nah?

I think so, her style hasn't changed much in the last three albums, her debut might a bit less black metal and moooore.... The Gathering? but any of the last 3 is a good entry point.

yeah this as good a place to start as any. the last two albums are more or less identical stylistically - the only outlier is the debut.

this is really good, better than Spiritual Instinct IMO. A lot of it plays it pretty safe, but it's executed very well. Absolutely gorgeous cleans, and her screams are incredible, especially on Mono No Aware, which is just a real gem. Will definitely be coming back to this one

Pretty close to Spiritual Instinct for me but the songwriting on that is just so damn tight. And the riffs are tastier.

Kodama and Ecailles are top shelf stuff and beat this easily but I'd say this is better than the rest of Alcest's discog, which is no mean feat.

Im glad to see Alcest get so much love on this site. When ecailles came out it felt like ulvers evolution.

That this is better than Souvenirs, Les Voyages, and Shelter, but not as good as Spiritual Instinct, Kodama, and Ecailles?

Seems about right to me…
