I liked it for a bit, but the initial surprise wore off and it just didn't hold up whatsoever.

Cohesion aside I liked it. It jumping all over the place is kinda tiring at points when there are songs you really like and they just drop it to do other things and there's a couple songs that do feel like filler and don't work (outro track sucks) but for the most part it sounds great so I can fuck with it.

The rating actually got low enough to drop off trending.

This is really Northlane 2.0 after all.

Anyway, in the end I just think they are very good at crafting ear-worms and that the song structure is not that spazzy lol. It actually follows very clear structures lol

I am not much of a "guitar" guy, and the drumming is on-point. very creative stuff, the guy surely knows his way around making a song better. I like the synths vibe, the harmonies. Lots of very nice crafted stuff on this lol. I fucking love "I caught You" and that german song which have been arguably the most shitted on here

The last two tracks are fillers, he states it as well pretty much he just wanted to do a very black metal song and a very electronic vibe. I think this band is still in the "try whatever see what sticks", which makes the next releases promising.

"We’re kind of the outliers in this whole black metal thing, because people think we’re phonies or whatever because we do different stuff. And the biggest sin you could commit in black metal is to have nu-metal influences. So that’s what we did with this song. We even slowed down the speed of the song just for those sequences so they would sound as Deftones-y as possible. So that’s a fun one. I can’t wait to play it live."

lol

If you're having problems hearing the influences I feel bad for you son. I got 99 problems but the Zeal ain't one.

that "people think we're phonies" mindset would have been cool about 20 years ago, but in a post-Sunbather, Old Nick-infested world, it's just another it's just another cop out for writing something they know won't be received well

Maybe that's why I like it so much? I've never really thought of this as a black metal act so much as an experimental metal act?

And I actually don't mind the repetitive structure of the "call and response" influence of their music. That style wasn't meant to be particularly deep, it was just meant to get people's minds off their work, worshipping God, or dancing. So for me it meets that purpose.

If it works for you then it works, I still find this to be lacking in far too many regards to be much else beyond potential guilty pleasure status.

Yeah, I mean, it's not Shakespeare... but I think that's where it sit with me right now minus the guilt. I know it's not super deep but it bangs.

Black metal has exploded in all kinds of different directions in the last twenty years. In fact, I’d say you’re much more likely to receive pushback for releasing a ‘trad’ BM album in 2022, so his comments about being “outliers” and “phonies” ring especially hollow. For me, the more experimental the better, but I could barely even get through something like ‘Bow’ and it certainly wasn’t because it deviated too much from a BM template.
