"Gagneux posted his Birdmask music to 4chan, as he said "to get feedback because they're brutally honest and don't give a shit about you,". He would ask users for two musical genres to combine and create a song in half an hour, as an experiment to expand his creativity.One of these users suggested that he fuse "black metal", while another suggested "n_gger music"; in response, he started Zeal & Ardor, which features elements of both black metal and slave songs. Other genres suggested included "Afro Djent, Nashville Power Electronics and Industrial Grunge". Gagneux later stated the band came from the question of "what if American slaves had embraced Satan instead of Jesus?""

I've rated this as 5, not because i think it is, it's probably a 3.5 tbh, but I want people who don't know Z&A to give them a listen and not be put off. Should I use this approach to rating? No, but I feel a need to counteract those voting low who clearly dislike the band and will never give it a good review. This just wastes everyone's time, including mine as I feel a need to write this pretentious comment. Nothing wrong with the review btw, I don't agree with it, but it is a good review and arguments against the album are well put.

And yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of them nowadays. There was a time where I actually loved Stranger Fruit, but once I just slightly peeled back the glamor from it, it fell apart. As I said, it's all smoke and mirrors.
That being said, I am always hoping the best for (most) bands and am willing to hear them/want to hear them improve. I went into this rexord expecting to have a lot to talk about, be it positive or negative. It just so happened that it was mainly negative in my experience.
Some people just genuinely find this bad and went into it without having expectations. Did some rate it poorly just because they hate the band? Absolutely, happens all the time for any given artist with a following. But sometimes it's just a big difference in opinion, and that's a-okay.
I'm glad you enjoyed the review and I appreciate the comment! I'd just be weary of lumping everyone together as bad-faith critics.

I suppose I find it odd that if I had heard the first two albums and not liked them, which some have stated, that I would even bother to listen to this latest offering. I wish I had enough time on my hands to go listening to not only all the new material offered up by bands I do like, let alone bands I don't. I'm off now to sit on a Taylor Swift album thread posting zeros ;)
