I gave it another listen. I enjoy it more now that I know what to expect and would probably enjoy it even more with the visual accompaniment. It does have the structure of a soundtrack.

I sat in traffic with this one. A lot to take in. Felt like it was too many ideas, like the trope of a frazzled woman pouring her purse out. In a way, it's a polished, bright version of an Igorrr record. Devy's talent and experience has afforded him the goodwill to make these two records, but they appear to come from a man who's done everything else he needs to do in his career.

Devin is one of the few artists with whom I come close to being a fanboy of, but I have to admit that it's now 10 years since the last albums from him that truly blew me away (Deconstruction and Ghosts). Everything after that had it's moments of brilliance but also a lot of emminently skippable stuff.

And while I love his experiments, Puzzle and Snuggles so far aren't sounding like the ones that will resurrect that fanboyism. Snuggles in particular is maybe the blandest thing he's ever released, because he has shown before that he knows how to pull off the spacey-jam thing really really well.

Anyway, gonna give Puzzle a couple more chances and see if if something clicks.

It's like a soundtrack to a movie I do not want to see

--Casualties of Cool is moon country. Ghost is Enya style ambient meditations. Setting aside the likes of Devlab, Synchestra, and The Hummer before them the man has a catalog that proudly proclaims "Look at me! I work the way the music moves me!"--

Everyone always forgets Punky Bruster when talking about his non-metal output, ha ha.
Nice review. I didn't really plan on bothering with this, but I'll give it a shot.

It's like 50% vaguely more interesting than most of everything else he's done of late, 50% dead fish. Step in the right direction innit

Well... That was weird. Even for Devin. At least Snuggles is cool and fun to chill out to. I really hope his next album (Lightwork) is more focused and catchy.

A lot of disrespect for Empath around here... Not good guys. Empath is the among the best albums of the last decade imho. A hard 5 in my book.

I found the bluray to be quite stunning.
The albums took me by surprise to some degree, because it wasn't what I was expecting, but they primed me for this mornings visit to the bluray.
The bluray is a very different album, and it works beautifully. The imagery put with the music is excellent and engaging as well.
The surround mix, which is generally my main point of focus, is quite stunning.
I'm hoping Devin revisits some of his classic albums and gives them a 5.1 treatment, but I reckon he is pretty focused on new things, and while the quality of his work is as high as it has been on the last couple of projects, so he should.
