I CAN'T GO HOME, THE WAY IS DARK AND OVERGROWN

I like Bright Eyes, but never loved them until their last album. I think this album edges out that one though.

I hear similarities to a bunch of bands in different arenas too, some veils here and some wintersleep here, a touch of talking heads, ought, david berman, craig finn

"To his son he leaves a cloudless sky"

"To his wife a box of undeveloped negatives"

legit nearly choked up first time I heard that

There's a romance but 'ill fitting shoes' and 'onion soup' mean that, well...he didn't actually leave 'em a lot really did he? In fact next to nothing tangible or useful

Son is potentially going to walk in his same ill fitted footsteps, hand me downs and big dreams

The lyrics are perfect in that song

they definitely are...the contrast between the useless/valueless things he left them and the promise of a clear blue sky and undeveloped negatives is an emotional double whammy...the latter two, to me, sort of define the album's title. a depiction of "dreams to dust" - all these things that indicate an unfulfilled life, yet a sliver of hope for those who outlive him to embrace.

It's the prettiest way of saying you left your wife and child nothing except their memories of you and your hopes for them

Yes, you worded that so much better and more succinctly than I could so thank you lol. Agreed 100% on the sentiment of the song, and its emotional impact.

The fact you have the humorous and surreal elements woven in there as well. Lyrics are strong throughout but that’s the one that really stands out, one critic said it’s a tongue in cheek self portrait - I don’t know enough about all the brothers, other than Simone Felice left the band

the humor works so well across the entire album

really makes the emotional lyrics that much more of a gut punch

This album is making me want to revisit previous outings by these guys that I might've dismissed prematurely.

Oh and as much as I'm in agreement with everyone (including myself) who ranked Celebrity X last, I really don't mind it. It feels like a silly The Crane Wife b-side. His vocal resemblance to Colin Meloy from The Decemberists is uncanny on that one.

I’ve been lazy with Celebrity X and haven’t totally followed the story on any listen, I sort of lose concentration with it I’m not sure why. It’s a decent enough tune

Ok, Silverfish has grown on me a lot. I’m bumping to 4.5…

Also bumped the self titled from a 3 to a 4 after three new listens…I guess it is more a 3.5 + ‘Don’t Wake the Scarecrow’ which is Simone Felice’s masterpiece and a definite 5 tune. ‘Murder By the Mistletoe’ and ‘Helen Fry’ are very very good songs too though, ones I probably glossed over in the past as they arrive late on a very long album.

A bit more barroom band’y, a bit more Dylan Worship’y, and too eclectic possibly - not as good as this one but it’s much better than remembered. It needed to flow as well as this one to rate higher, could have done with losing 15 minutes. Strangely maybe the opener and closer would be first for the chopping block on that album.

Glad to see this growing. Silverfish took a similar trajectory with me...initially I thought it was pretty weak but now I love it. Even Celebrity X has earned some favor with me. As Finn said, it really is a perfect set of songs.

I'm excited to dive back into their discog. Some of their older releases I'm decently well-versed on, others I skimmed at the time of release and prematurely discarded.

Look at me, I’m currently in the same country as Craig Finn!

Turns out he’s not touring tho, I think ( yeah he’s not. Bummer.)
