To be clear I don’t dislike the production here. It’s an interesting sound but holy vacants probably has my favorite production ever

"Vocals mix, I think the choices are very intentional. It gives the vocals a ton of dynamics instead of a compressed-to-hell all-instruments-come-second-to-vocals feeling. Sister captures this well, there are moments that are densely layered and quieter, almost playing a more textural role for the larger polyphonic feeling, and then there's moments where the vocals are >very< up front."

I respect this argument a lot, but I think this dynamic, polyphonic feeling was all accomplished in their last few recordings while having the vocals be crystal clear and in-balance. I'm just unsure if the mixing decisions here were really necessary for what they were trying to accomplish.

Granted, there are segments of this record, like the climax of Brother, where I think the approach works really damn well.

they could have expanded on several ideas here

Darkness Oh Hell and Never Born Never Dead are same length and they’re classics… If it perfectly encapsulates all their ideas and ambitions, I don’t see a problem with a short runtime

I could have used more of an instrumental unleashing at the end of Mother, for instance, but for the most part, the complaints I've had about the band being too restrained have disappeared as I listen to this more.

All the moments I'm looking for in a Trophy Scars record are well-satisfied by the end of this,.

I've always been fairweather with this band, but since they release so infrequently I'll have to give this a spin.

Apparently I'm on the 4th track now. The other 3 just kind of blew by in no time. So far this is pretty w.e, will give it a couple-few listens tho as it's so short
