his vox is just part of the issue though - the composition (mainly metrical) is smart on a micro level, but v homogeneous across the whole album. if you're gonna sing that way over every song, at least take them to slightly different ballparks once in a while
As a lyricist and kind of a theater kid (whatever that means I read it on the first page), I am actually surprised about how much stuff he can put in from a lyrical perspective, and if I have to raise a criticism is that yep, it´s not really clear who is talking/who is saying things because some of the passages are quite homogenous in tone, but shift completely lyrically so I see your point

Every time I listen to this I find a new lyric that ruins my life, this time it was “and every year in tears she’d press on him to stay”

I kinda wonder what this would be like if there was duet style vocals that designated the two characters.

their record label said this will be a digital-only release and to that I say

Would be cool if they pulled a polygondwanaland and give carte blanche to whatever little boutique distributors want to release limited physical runs but tbh this band probably doesn't have the clout to pull that off
Anyway 2nd listen is confirming my first impression that this is in fact great, only real complaint is that the vocals can get just a tad lost in the mix when things get all sweeping and lush and epic-sounding, and for an album this capital-L Lyrical it's kind of annoying that I need genius pulled up to know what he's actually singing even if only intermittently

its so frustrating when bands that are a big deal about lyrics mix vocals low looking at the mwYs untitled album and La Dispute's most recent release...

^ my friend and i have affectionately dubbed this phenomenon "Will Yip syndrome" (idk if he produced La Dispute but he definitely produced Untitled)

the weird thing is I love both those albums and the mix works in their favor IMO

I can't say what would happen if I rerated after hearing miscellaneous tracks without the context of the album over the past couple weeks

Having actively avoided doing that out of vague self-respect time conservatism that would not hold up in court, neither can I

To be fair on first listen I couldn't decide if this was a 1.5 or a 4.5
