I think it's fair to call Soul of a New Machine a death metal album, or at least a transition from death metal to the style on Demanufacture. It has blastbeats and growls and riffs that wouldn't fit on any of their later records.
Concrete is probably more death metal than Soul is, though.

There is already a female fronted Fear Factory clone from Russia called Conflict. They're not as good as the original, but they're still good. Either way, I could see adding a female vocalist as a way to shake up their sound and give the songs new life in a live setting.

I went back and listened to Soul last night, and there's definitely riffs and beats that are totally death metal on that album.

Yeah, I was saying this about a female vocalist because Dino tackled the question in an interview and because I heard Conflict's cover of Scumgrief (or was it Martyr I can't remember) and I thought that the female clean vocals worked wonders.
Also, I heard Conflict's song The Architect with Burton on vocals.

I don't know about that. He was special a long time ago, but he hasn't expanded his sound in like 25 years. I'm actually interested to hear a new vocalist.

It's easy for fans to want the band to change their name because of a member change, because we have no real emotional or financial stake like the remaining members do.
Also, we act as if starting from scratch with a new name after 30 years is a good idea ever. Well... Maybe if you're the Lost Prophets.
Edit: I mean, the reality of the situation is that any established band has put too much time, effort, and money into their 'brand' to just dump it as soon as a member (no matter how important) jumps ship. That name recognition is huge, especially for mid-tier bands.

What part that he can't sing the songs live anymore, you don't understand? If the singer can't sing the songs properly, then find a replacement. Ozzy might be the exception to the rule, but other than that, when the singer has serious problems with his vocal chords, for me it's replaceable. I'm sorry.
