The intro to this album is one of the best things he's done. The rest of the album is hit or miss but still pretty good overall

It still baffles me that a one man band can produce such quality music. T/T into Dead Loons is just beautiful. Embers at Dawn is an amazing track. Really enjoying this one so far

The production is really murky -- more than usual panopticon to my ears. I find myself really straining to hear the intricacies when the busier sections arrive.

Good review but I'd argue this is actually one of his more consistent records thematically and this is far from his first foray into blackgaze/post-black metal.
I enjoy this quite a bit, but I also have a little trouble getting passed the production. Seems like an odd choice for him, we know he can produce his albums to the point where they are gritty yet still discernible. Maybe the murkiness was him leaning extra hard into the shoegaze influences?
Either way, record rules and again, good review.

Thanks @TheSpirit!
I do agree with you and others that this isn't the best production, but it hasn't bothered me too much.
As far as the blackgaze/post-black metal discussion goes, I'd say I have a particular sound in mind when "blackgaze" gets mentioned, and Panopticon's work hasn't fallen into that category for me. Post-black metal, for me, tends to encompass more varied sounds as a term, and I could definitely see Panopticon's previous work (and this one) falling into that. Genres are a tricky thing sometimes, but just want to clarify where I'm coming from with that.

I definitely think this album leans more into the post rock/metal then any of his other albums

@eak
On the Subject of Mortality is definitely very blackgaze/post rock but it does seem over the past 5 or so years he's been leaning more heavily into post rock/post metal than anything Roads to the North or earlier.
On another note holy shit this is so goddamn good. The way he meanders between tranquility and thunderous melancholy is incredible. Tbh this is probably up there with Roads to the North and Autumn Eternal.

His splits with Wheels Within Wheels (the second one) and Vestiges are also blackgaze/post-black metal and worth checking out fwiw

Oh, I just realized revisions of the past contains all the subject of mortality stuff. So I have heard that and remember it being pretty cook
Will check out the splits on the way to work tomorrow

revisions has the remixed version, which I think kinda benefits Disservices, but takes away the thin hazy atmosphere of Mortality.
