It strikes me as a better "stumble upon this gorgeous lyrical gem" moment. I'd have opted for Dinosaur personally, or maybe Obstacle. Both of those are tidy, memorable tracks that would have excelled as singles. But again, I'm not here to question their methodology because clearly it works for them.

Andy said they were having an impossible time picking singles because the whole album is supposed to be one fluid experience. I get the feeling they said "what the hell, this one's only 2 mins long, let's give away as little as possible." I think if it weren't for being signed to Loma Vista, they would have dropped the entire album at one time.

"sorry row all I remember from Virgin is "Colly Strings," which is phenomenal to be fair"

sounds like you gotta refamiliarise with Where Have You Been, I Can Feel Your Pain, Sleeper, I Can Barely Breathe etc

sorry I will stan this album till I die but yeah the others are pretty good too I guess

All those tracks you mentioned rule and if I didn't have some sort of psychological complex drawing me to anything epic and grandiose, Virgin could easily be my favorite MO. It easily beats out METN for me which is sort of an unpopular take. I just love Simple Math/Black Mile/Million Masks, I feel like they've nailed their sleek and bombastic sound without losing the emotion that made them stand out to begin with, and I just can't get enough of it.

Few pages late on this reply, sow (you dirty lil piglet), but yeah you absolutely justify the length and breadth of your review, particularly with your expertise surrounding how this album connects to their other work.

Glad for the advice surrounding the new single, will keep it a surprise for the release

METN is only just above Cope in my ranking tbh. super spicy take but Shake it Out through Pride sets a standard that the rest of the album absolutely doesn't live up to - the only second half songs I really listen to are Hot One and The River

on the other hand, I adore Simple Math but it's just too inconsistent to beat out Virgin which has no weak points whatsoever for me, and the lyrics on Virgin are still Andy's best. one album of the cream of Sinful and Simple Math would have been their best release, but alas

Well that version of the review is gone (I was just so uncomfortable with the length), but I'm glad I wasn't insane for even publishing it to begin with. At some point in time I felt like that was a good final draft, but then I immediately experienced regret after posting it. I'm a fan of the abbreviated version that I pared it down to, hopefully it's more digestible to the average passer by.

And yeah, Telepath is a personal favorite for the lyrics alone I'm just not so sure of its utility as a single.

Overall, this is probably my 2nd/3rd favorite MO record. Nothing touches Black Mile, I just have to decide if this is better than Simple Math or not. Right now it's too close to call.

@Rowan: you cherry picked my two absolute favorites off METN (Hot One, The River). An even spicier take I'll offer up is that Shake It Out and I've Got Friends aren't even in the top 25 MO songs. They strike me as sort of uninteresting lyrically and a bit juvenile overall; I'd take Cope's prime cuts (especially Girl Harbor) over either of those. Pride indeed rules though. I'm Like a Virgin is a much better album than METN through and through, however.

ABMTTS > MMOG = SM > Virgin > METM > Cope.

I can second the Girl Harbor love as long as we're talking about the Hope version, which is a top 20 MO song for me, and not the Cope one which is just alright. literally the only songs I prefer Cope'd are The Ocean and Top Notch, I think

I have some love for I've Got Friends cos it's the song that got me into this band, even though it's a bit basic in hindsight it did the job it was meant to. you're crazy about Shake it Out though, stone cold ripper

I wish I connected to BM like others. To me its just another MO album, which is how I feel/felt about METN and Virgin. Simple Math and Cope are the only ones that struck a chord with me.

I def think I'm going to love this though, cause I adore Bed Head and Telepath.

Just listened to Telepath, amazing. Don't know if I can get through another day of waiting.. I also have 2 meetings planned Friday morning so that's fucking great.
