Just gave Black Mile to the Surface another listen and unfortunately it made me wanna lower my rating on this. As good as this album was, it is just not nearly as massive as Black Mile.

I don't get the hate for the opener. Is it the lyrics? I really enjoy the swell at the climax. That being said, "The Internet" doesn't hit like "The Silence".

^ agreed. I dig inaudible and think it leads real well into angel of death

My general impression of this is that it lacks the emotional punch of Black Mile, but is more tightly unified thematically/atmospherically. I don't think that the songwriting cohesion makes up for the drop off in emotional impact, however. The stuff here seems happier and more content (which makes sense considering where the band members are at in their lives), and while that sort of stuff brings the warm feels, it doesn't stay with you like the existential anxiety of The Silence.

Also, agreed that the swell in Inaudible is one of the highlights. My favorite moment on the entire record is the second half of Obstacle; for whatever reason I get chills every single time. That's one moment where the passion is undeniably on par with ABMttS.

Inaudible is lyrically weird and musically plodding

lyrically weird yes, musically plodding by design even though it's gorgeous so...oh well?

Im convinced that if they made an ABMttS part two, it wouldn't feel sincere. Some bands can get away with having multiple records sounding the same, but having a second ABMttS sounding record could have a contrary effect and make me care less for the 'part one'. I'm happy that they made this shift in sound (and nailing it).

Also: Obstacle is the tits.

The only parts of Inaudible I don't like are those first two lines and the "options are optional" line.

yeah it's a bit lyrically clunky in the opening seconds but it sticks a landing, especially by the end

Coming back to this one. Album always seems underrated in my mind when I'm not listening to it, then I give it another spin and am surprised every time by how great it is.

Inaudible and Bed Head rule, Keel Timing was a grower for me

My impression of Inaudible was that it is just them trying to make "Maze" again, but hey album still rules hard. Those tracks might grow on me.

Lyrics are strong on this too, except a few lines on "Inaudible" if i remember correctly

Yeah it's def like The Maze but an evolved version, there's a lot more to it. The lyrics begin a bit clunky indeed, although they iron it out by the end of the track.

Did anyone else here jam "Bottle Rocket" by Briston Maroney? Love Andys voice on that

Edit: Evolution should mean it is better than what came before it and imo it is not, but nice enough tho

I'm still loving this - it's far less "heavy" than Black Mile (in the emotional sense for me even though it still hits in places), I definitely have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to Black Mile, but this is easier to just put on whenever

I sat on the promo for about a month listening to it daily, then shared in the euphoria of everyone here finally getting to listen. Afterwards, I felt my enthusiasm regress a bit, probably just due to burnout. Recently it's climbed back into my rotation again. This has comfortably settled into a 2nd place tie with Simple Math in their discography for me, with only Black Mile existing as an unbeatable milestone.

This is easily their second best. And i totally agree that ABMTTS is unbeatable, but they might Reach similar heights in the future. At least i hope so C:
