"Great review man, can't say I'm a Children of Bodom fan, saw them with Soilwork once and it was by chance, hardly remember anything.

But yeah, too young to go. RIP."

Thanks Dewi! And I'd give them another shot... or at least, check out their classic-era albums like Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper. Such a good mix of power metal and melo-death

Trust me, I do make sure to be as well-informed as possible, on practically all my topics of interest.

Alexi Laiho's death is something that was absent from not only the regular news sources I follow, but also didn't seem to be mentioned in my facebook feeds as well, despite me being subscribed to various appropriate pages/outlets, and also being friends with many, many metalheads.

What is even more curious: LG Petroff, who is by far a much less "famous" figure in metal, 's death is something I did come to know about in real time.

Soooo weeeird.... O_o

what's that about Mustaine?

"And don't give me the fucking 'you have no idea what an addiction it is' bullshit speech. If you receive the proper treatment you will absolutely overcome it."

I don't want to pry, but of the people I've known who got addicted to heroin only one is alive. You never really come out of addiction, not heroin.

Yep, even if you "come out of addiction", it's always something that looms over you and can draw you back in at any moment. Look at Phillip Seymour Hoffman, he was clean for over a decade and it just took one overpowering craving and return to heroin to do him in.

"also didn't seem to be mentioned in my facebook feeds as well"

Laiho was about 60% of my newsfeed in the day or two after he died. it was like a bomb went off in my friends circle and general network :c

^ well I guess that's just one more point to the multiverse theory then, huh? Realities within realities, man. Sometimes they converge, sometimes they diverge.

Exactly. I couldn't escape news articles of his death for at least a week whenever I went on Facebook

"yeah, of course it was mentioned on a highly specialized music-related site. My point was that no big media news outlet mentioned it. Meanwhile, most media went out of their way to overreport on the deaths of... DMX, Larry King, and Larry Flint."

I didn't know any of those other people died until I read your post, but I also know that's just me being on permanent media blackout. I don't know why you would you expect to hear any specific piece of news on any subject though, provided you're as busy as the average person

Not that it's fair or right that Laiho was shafted but death metal certainly isn't in the cultural lexicon of the general public

even at their peak it would have been uncommon to meet people who knew who COB were, and its like 17 years after their peak popularity. I'm honestly surprised I even heard about it as much as I did, shows that they made a big impact on the people who grew up with their earlier albums

i was always under the impression that their popularity peaked with AYDY and that live dvd which admittedly was pretty fun ... but maybe my perception is coloured by the fact that the music itself on that album was a lot chuggier and more hot topic accessible than their earlier material

but yea otherwise i agree

it would be hard to say exactly but its definitely somewhere in that 2003-05 stretch. I don't think AYDY helped their popularity though, its more that it capitalized on the prior success of needled 24/7 as a single. In 03 that song and album blew up and Alexi put out another sinergy album and was being hyped all over the internet and interviewed in every guitar mag. AYDY had something like 2 good songs, but definitely the album had a lot of pre-release hype and trashed had a good reception as a single before release. I remember seeing TV ads for the album before release which was unusual.

I also remember carnal forge were pissed about the name of the album being similar to theirs - "aren't you dead yet?". but that album sucked too

Good review man
Never listened to much COB but one of my old friends was absolutely mesmerized with Alexi Laiho. Says Alexi is probably the most talented guitarist (now was) on this earth. Maybe hyperbolic but man those riffs on Follow the Reaper dont lie.
Also not to beat this subject to death but even with support there is no guarantee towards overcoming an addiction. My father tried dropping his daily beer intake from 15 cans a day to 7. He had a seizure. He did not succeed. Withdrawal is fucking harsh, even harsher for alcohol than some hard drugs surprisingly. To say anyone can overcome it would severely undermine how powerful alchohol addiction actually is.

Thanks Dedes, and you pretty much hit the nail on the head. Not everyone is able to overcome something like alcoholism... I've had my own troubles with it over the past 2 years, and even in periods when I stop drinking for a few weeks, just one beer can be enough to pull me right back in. I'm trying to get to a point where I've stopped drinking altogether, because I can never have just one drink at a time... either I'm getting drunk or I'm not drinking altogether that day. I can't just go in-between

Yeah I know you've mentioned that before. I guess for some people theres just an inherent desire once you have it that you can't suppress. Same thing with cigs too tbh, when I was young I thought you were addicted the moment you touched one. Now I know it's really just up to your body if you can just stop at 1 or 2.

Btw that's very admirable of you man, stay headstrong. Its gonna be a lot of work but maybe someday you wont even find yourself wanting a drink.
