I really want to enjoy this album more but I can't give it anything higher than a 3 - bar the album highlights (Phantom Days, The Dark Unbroken, closing track), this is pretty forgettable. Good, but disappointing by DT's standards.

Well the one major gripe I have with this record is the tracklist, I think the album would've benefited immensely had they put a little more effort in that aspect. The bonus tracks are great, Phantom Days has no business in being the opener, and tracks like Transient and Identical to None could have been the bonus tracks as far as I'm concerned. The vox and guitarwork slay hard tho

I haven't listened to the bonus tracks but I'll be sure to give em a spin, thanks.
I agree on the vox and the guitar work, Amott and Reinholdz bring something new to the table with their technical proficiency but I feel the band could have done more with the addition of such great guitar players. I feel DT is stagnating, creatively speaking.

Np, hope you enjoy them. Also, this album is better with repeated listens (like most of theirs are), and I really feel like Phantom Days and A Drawn Out Exit are like their best tracks in 15 years. Stagnating creatively? Maybe. Thriving? Probably not. Being comfortable in their post-Construct sound, debatably. It's kinda hard for me to peg where they are right now, but I know I like this era of DT more than Fiction/WatV so that's money in my book

Yeah, it feels like a grower to me, and you're definitely right when you say most of their albums are - I needed a dozen listens and a good few months to actually start enjoying Atoma from start to finish. Perhaps I didn't give this one enough time.
Funnily enough, I personally think Fiction is one of their best post-The Gallery efforts. It's certainly interesting to see how diverse opinions are on their discography and the albums people consider their best - pretty much a testament to the regularity with which they pump out consistently good, if not excellent stuff.

Yeah, it's great how many people have different opinions on their favorite records by them in this thread alone. They're definitely one of the torchbearers of MDM still.
I dismissed Atoma until like a year later when I was totally hooked. Didn't make the same mistake for this one

Since we're on the subject of ranking DT's albums....
Fiction > Haven > The Gallery > The Mind's I > Projector >= Character > Construct >= Damage Done >= Moment >= We are the Void > Skydancer > Atoma
Haven always seems to get overlooked/forgotten. May need to revisit Atoma at some point but so far it's done little for me.

Yup pretty much disagree with most of your rankings which is amazing

Yeah I think it just goes to show that DT has never put out an uninspired/objectively bad album and it's really just different strokes for different folks. Up until a month ago Character would be down there with Atoma, but it finally clicked (really took a while though)

My ratings are a bit like Axe to Fall.

I have yet to familiarize myself with the new line up but I think it was difficult to do better right now.

Fiction is the hottest shit agree

As underwhelming as this album is, Remain in the Unknown is one of their most beautiful tracks that I've kinda been obsessed with lately

Takes a quite a few listens to completely dispel thoughts of Gallery or DD/Character/Fiction, but it is finally becoming its own album to me now, and as such I'm getting close to 4-ing it.

Remain in the Unknown is the hidden gem here for sure

As far as rankings go, their first two should be somewhere in their top 5, and Fiction and WATV -somewhere in the bottom 4 for me

I’m no DT expert but this is magic. The Dark Unbroken was the first track to really hook me but the rest is just as good.

Dark is such a great track dudes. If only the rest of the album was as epic..
