I've listened to Echoes more than 200 times, and it's still as great as it can get. It's visibly not the case for Pangea.

I kind of understand where they're coming from tbh. As glorious as Echoes is, it doesn't amount to much more than a very long (very cool, also) intro, then an extended funky jam, then an ambient section into a more standard pink floyd tune which reprises the jam. For example, I could see those who fall into the camp of "Animals isn't their best record" (now that's sacrilege!) not enjoying because the band had been performing most of the jams that led to tunes like Pigs (Three Different Ones) and Dogs leading up to the release of Animals, and it just didn't blow them out of the water quite like Dark Side had. Personally, Echoes is right up there in Pink Floyd hall of fame with Shine On. But I can see why it might not be such a hard grab for someone else. Pink Floyd hadn't quite fused their psychedelia with the cinema of prog yet, and that's part of what makes Meddle so damn interesting.
