"This seems like one of those albums that's only listened to and loved by a small group of people"
3.5 million views is pretty sizable for this stuff.

Are the static and pops gonna be present through all six + hours of this?
|
| |
You won't notice them a lot. And I meant more so within this community, seems like more of a niche thing

Check out the song I posted on the first page of this thread

I'm listening to the full stream but 10 minutes in they haven't abated.

Nevermind, they just stopped.

I've heard all 6 parts but I really want to experience the whole thing the whole way through.
I'm not in love with what I heard, but I do find it deeply compelling, interesting, and admirable.

More attention for experimental/ambient music is always good. Album is great and the review is dece too

I remember that after watching Requiem for a Dream I was like "god this was so disgusting, I don't want to ever watch this again... I freaking love it"
This album makes me feel the same way

Gave this a listen during a long study session the other week, can't say it left an incredible mark on me or whatnot but it's certainly stuck around in my head. I've heard this is pretty impactful to those who have dealt with dementia directly within their family.
I dig the "brief moments of lucidity" effect he has in the latter movements

lol why are people shitting on Autechre? Completely different music.
This album is great but the dementia concept seems optional to me. I interpret the music in a more general way, order descending into chaos. Could apply to several mental diseases.

The only thing that gives the concept of dementia credibility are the music samples used. You can argue that the use of this old music would be relevant to a person that is old enough now that they could be at an age where dementia has/will start to occur.

The premise of this is pretty inseparable from the whole package, for me at least. He set out with a vision for this concept and I think he nailed it. However, 'dementia' is a broad category of brain diseases and usually manifests in Alzheimer's, though it can be other things too. I really don't think it fits with 'several' mental illnesses though. If you told me this was the story of someone with worsening anxiety or depersonalization disorder I wouldn't be nearly as sold on the idea

"The only thing that gives the concept of dementia credibility are the music samples used"
What exactly - sonically speaking - does give a concept credibility? Isnt a sonic representation of a concept a bit abstract to try and quantify?
|
| |
Not to mention is isn't the 'only' thing. There's plenty on here that helps tie the music into the concept which I went over in the review. The constant blurring of old memories (songs) and fleeting moments of coherence rly help sell the premise

Yeah, it's all interpretive anyway.

one of the most ambitious pieces of music ive ever heard, the last 5 mins is just soul crushing

6 albums that never averaged above a 4 and typically were a 3.5 is now a 6 hour drag with a 4.4 average and isn't allowed to be rated 1 or 1.5, yeah, okay.
