Nice review Dewi! Haven’t listened to anything by these guys since Vertebrae, should check this and a few of their other recent ones out.

black metal, prog metal and folk metal are all very hit-or-miss subgenres with me but somehow everything here seems to land! the diversity of genres is ridiculous but it all somehow feels cohesive

The thing is this album doesn’t sound like Enslaved but does sound like Enslaved. Props to them for pulling it off. Excellent review and thanks.

Thanks for your review! I have mixed feelings about it. Technically, I like how it feels, it's organic, nice guitar tone, vocals not too loud (which I like a lot), drums from the audience perspective (unless the drummer is a lefty?) kinda annoys me, love how they sound though, especially the snare.
Regarding the composition, the atmospherical, acoustic and experimental sections were the ones I enjoyed the most. The "metal" parts, riffs and verses, even some choruses, sounded a bit predictable and thus they failed to grab my attention. My favorite track is Flight of Thought and Memory. The harmonies are interesting and the transitions between the extreme and the calmer sections are nice but from the solos and on, the song again becomes way too simple until the experimental ending which rescues the song. So, that's what I thought about it in a nutshell.

A notable shift from their last 3 but still delivering the goods 15 albums on.

@theAlexandrian: great contribution, nice to see someone dissect and analyse in a little more depth once in a while.
'The "metal" parts, riffs and verses, even some choruses, sounded a bit predictable and thus they failed to grab my attention.' (2)
I agree with this, they saved all their creativity for the prog elements and the heavier segments don't really hit home like they should. I said it earlier, but I almost think this album didn't even warrant growls. They sound out of place at times.

Album is smooth and a flow(er).

Flight is also one of my favorites, it's the one track that hits that good ol extreme side of the 2000s and the prog and it balances out just right.

Urjotun is very cool. Amazing how it transitions from pseudo grunge to bm-esque riffing.

Coast said it best : a notable shift ...
Professional and amazing musicians. It always perplexes me how some bands with massive discographies can still dig up and create something “new”. Doesn’t the music idea well run dry ever?

Also disappointed, not very memorable and stuck in 2nd gear with one or two standouts as others have said. I liked RIITIIR but there's usually prog bloat they could cut if they want to trim the song lengths they just seem to have left the exciting songwriting bits on the cutting room floor.
