Background? Either they're synths or these glassy, soaring, reverbed to hell and back guitar leads (my bad for immediately only thinking synth, but I'm pretty sure I still hear some synths). Or potentially a blend. The chord progressions are just a bit too bright for me. Like, too hopeful and happy somehow. There's a conceptual dissonance.

Well their melodic approach is how they add an atmosphere. It's meant to heighten both the drama and the emotion. In fairness, if it came across as hopeful and happy at times, it's part of the point, as they're trying to improve themselves after personal struggle or overcome/point out injustices. I definitely don't think they stand out in such a manner where it sounds so conflicting.
If the shoegaze doesn't click then it just doesn't click.

I'd hardly call anything here shoegaze. I just don't feel a lot of darkness at all from the music tbh and I crave it from loud stuff like this. That's part of my own biases, I guess. If I were looking some metalgazey stuff, it'd probably be more along the lines of The Angelic Process. Still, I'm criticizing it rn, but it isn't BAD by any means. I can see why people would like it and I hear the effort; maybe it's just not my stylistic cup of tea.
The ending to What Was She Wearing sounded really cool though.

Yeah it's not all shoegaze, it's just an inspiration that seeps in. But hey, if it ain't your cuppa tea there's not a problem with it.

Very interesting album so far. I enjoyed their previous album but feel I'll have to spin this one numerous times to really appreciate it. Perhaps I'm not good at articulating this, but it almost has these catchy minor key pop-punk sensibilities that I like.
Lyrically I'd say it's progressive metal, which I am confident will rustle some folks' jimmies.

it's not shoegaze, it's skramz with post- shit. If you like this, try funeral diner, mesa verde, and athletics.

Can’t you care about lyrics as an adult?? Also I think the last half is good enough to eek out a 3.5.
