Turned out to be quite a different beast from private music. Agree on "respect[ing] the experimentation". They're both strong efforts.

I will never tire of that bridge riff on ‘Genesis’.

And it's better than at least half of what ended up on Ohms, I'd say. Absolutely killer chorus.

“Crest” is the gore track that leaked(some kind of live looped recording) and “sensations” is the demo from this record

Tried to give this another go yesterday. Genesis, Ceremony, Ohms, and Radiant City are really great tracks. And while I understand the band's vision (a little), the atonality on a lot of these songs just made them tough to get through. I definitely prefer the more melodic, vibe-coded style of private music and Gore to this. Credit to Carpenter, though, this whole album is chock full of great riffs, even if the songs as a whole sometimes don't measure up. This is, to me, a very strange sounding Deftones album.

Chino's vocals on several choruses seem to be done in a dissonant manner compared to the instrumentation. It's hard to pinpoint and I'd have to go back through again to offer specific examples. I consider it an intentional choice by Chino and not a criticism of his performance. And maybe I'm using the term incorrectly, it's just the word that popped into mind when describing my thoughts.

Seems I missed the boat on the Eros leak. I doubt it's as good as this, though ;-)

It’s a demo with a lot of potential. Claiming it’s better than any of their full lengths is kind of silly

@unclereich

I like deftones but everyone here overhypes the absolute shit out of everything they do lol. People be halfway through the first listen claiming it's the best album ever made

Yep it’s a viscous cycle and all I’ve known since I joined the site.

Also, as for the atonality... I feel like that's the offkey singing he always does lol. I think it generally suits the music though but he very often songs out of key

I immediately thought it was their best album, and surprisingly I stand by that opinion 6 years later. I feel like this is Diamond Eyes without any of the mid tracks.
