what were people listening to before they started to like Merzbow/noise?

kinda wondering if i should just give up on this genre entirely, seems i'm too vanilla with my desire for melody and hooks

The Rita was my introduction to harsh noise, but I think noise rock like Boris, noisecore like The Locust and Anal Cunt, and power electronics like Prurient and Whitehouse were what I heard prior. Harsh noise is def not for everyone, The Rita certainly didn't click with me the first time I heard Thousands of Dead Gods.

I'm not sure what you've heard yet in terms of noise rock, but I think Boris would be a good stepping stone. Check out Pink and Akuma no Uta. If you really want some more varied sounding harsh noise then I'd highly recomment Mo*Te's Life in a Peaceful New World or Kazumoto Endo's While You Were Out

Harsh noise is great. My gateway was probably Full of Hell. As I got older, I always liked hearing rougher production styles and guitars that were drenched in distortion and feedback. Basically I have this part of me that's always chasing the hardest, harshest, most abrasive sounds possible. So getting into noise music was a logical progression. Otomo Yoshide's stuff really bangs also. Though it isn't all noise. And yeah, I still think this review is quite underwritten.

It's a big jump from "Time stands still" to "The concept of the self is eradicated," lol

"The concept of the self is eradicated" is the one nice line and it feels like it's far too early in the review. I could see it working best as a sort of climax towards the end; it definitely feels like it could be ascribed to this very challenging album. Lots of it feels throw away, though. "Mountains move. Empires fall. Hell freezes over." All sort of empty cliches that don't meaningfully relate to one another.

If this is what it takes to write a good review, I've been thinking about it way too hard. Not sure why I decided to care this much though. lmao my bad.

Pos!

Perfect review for a Merzbow album. It's like when the album is finished, the world just became uglier.
