It's def one of her best Rowan
And sorry Chan I retract my snide remarks (pun intended)

just finished the first spin and agree with pretty much everything you said, especially: "Too many of the songs’ flourishes are really just tricks of production rather than genuine songwriting ingenuity."
like the first record she's much better at indie rock than folk. i'll return to "kyoto" and "i know the end"

lightly agreed on that
"Too many of the songs’ flourishes are really just tricks of production rather than genuine songwriting ingenuity." I can't believe people genuinely believe this, it's just weird to me

"Too many of the songs’ flourishes are really just tricks of production rather than genuine songwriting ingenuity."
for me personally, I guess I understand this point, but at the same time I feel like the "tricks" in production are used to amplify songwriting and can be used as a technique within the songwriting itself... I don't know, just something I always viewed in that regard

I don't have too strong an opinion on this album, although I thought I Know The End was very good, but this review just seems a little rushed.

ok after I cleansed my ears with some DM, I'm ready for this.
Treat me kindly, blondie.

"for now pretty studio tricks, average songs"
No, unfortunately, this is very accurate.
|
| |
Hey average don't mean bad! They are alright, but there is nothing revolutionary so far imo.
Melodies, beats, lyrics (her strength for sure) are not better than debut, but the production is so fucking good that creates a mirage making you think everything is actually better than it really is.
Again, my feelings people! If you enjoy this fervently more power to you!

i was kidding haha, how dare you feel differently about something i like! i think it's a pretty studio tricks + great songs combination for me, this outshines the debut in how lyrically desperate/bleak it is while still sounding gorgeous idk
|
| |
Punisher sounds WAY better, but in essence i feel the songs in debut (minus dat closer) are stronger. There was also the surprise factor too, when debut came out. There have been SO MANY singer songwriters in recent years and after that album that almost everything sounds the same to me these days.
Still, it's a good record, definitely enjoyable.

And chan nailed that review, goddamn.
