Here's Rody using playback tracks for some of the harsh vocals in Limb from Limb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXNk082B2xk sucks if you ask me...

Can’t open it rn but that’s lame. Just have somebody else in the band do them or don’t even bother.

Yeah, that was tough to watch. Should just have a harsh vocalist join the band or something.

Or even just change the delivery. I would even be fine with him doing some more spoken-word like vocals over it (sort of like a Keith Buckley delivery). And I just feel bad for the dude. He does what he does genuinely for the love of performing and that vocal style but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who could repeat his performance over the 20+ years they've been doing this.

If they can still put out albums reliably, I think it's a decent trade-off from live. It's just becoming more and more apparent that the dude doesn't have it or isn't approaching it in a healthy manner.

Unfortunatly people need to tour to get at least some money in. The industry in brutal, especially to singers, especially when they're doing stuff that's asking a lot from the voice.

i dont rlly give a shit if he uses a backing vocal track and hiring another member would be waaaay more expensive than doing that, but it is sad to hear he cant do it anymore

Fair point. Would be a 17% pay cut of there splitting even with the new guy!

I think it's also sad to see how live members are completely interchangeable now - other than Rody of course (and yeah, Tim's still there but he could be swapped easily).

It's just hired guns playing someone else's material. Sure, obviously that happens in all bands when new members come, they play old material written by old members, but in this case, even for new material will be like that. Luke's a big part of writing the new album (but he quit touring and Ben Davis is their touring guitarist), Tim and Rody are obviously still there, drums are gonna be played by Nathan Bulla on the new album (but their touring drummer is Matt HK from Mandroid Echostar I believe?), bass I have no idea but on the second to last tour it's been Henry Selva from The Human Abstract and some other rando on the last tour (I have no clue who'll play bass on the new record).

So yeah, a mess.

^ fair point. I’m glad I caught them live years back and I’m still happy that Luke’s writing their albums with them.

Happy to see this album got love here, but yeah Rody can't sing very well or scream anymore and it's pretty sad. Honestly in the time leading up to this album I had 0 expectations for it, largely because of him, so I was very pleasantly surprised when this album/he didn't sound like ass. He's definitely being helped by production though, he tried to do an isolated live studio sing through of All Hands and even in that environment where he can do several takes and give it his best it was, while not absolute dogshit, pretty rough in parts. Always feel really bad for these guys that have done the super gruff high range vocals+screams for years without really doing it properly and then just can't anymore, even though they still clearly have the writing ability and desire to perform.

He did a meatloaf cover right before this album came out too and it was one of the worst things I'd ever heard, probably what bottomed out my expectations. Sucks that he can't really do it live anymore, I saw them a couple times way back in Kezia/Fortress era and it was great. Guess I've gotta give up on seeing any of the back half of their catalogue live at this point qq

Oof just watched that youtube video and not only are the scrims recorded but he is swinging WILDLY for those notes while hitting maybe like 1/3 of them, all with that wobbly tired Bruce Dickinson voice thing going on

Honestly 5 years ago when they did the Fortress 10 year tour, Rody still sounded phenomenal to me. This album was incredible too (likely very production supported on the vocals).

Hoping that he keeps at it with the live albums cus I really dont care if his voice degrades, he is a phenomenal song writer regardless (I mean, I'm a fan of Megadeth, I will be just fine accepting the vocals as they are as long as the songwriting is there)

Have heard rumours that these guys have been using playback since forever (cannot remember enough from when I saw em like 7 yrs ago to weigh in firmly), but wouldn't be surprised if he's been trying to stave off the inevitable for far longer than people realise

This album was pretty good though. Rarely jam more than one track at a time, but it tends to hit the spot. The operatic vocals are a really integral part of what PtH do and Dir En Grey have given us a cautionary tale as to the immediate diminishing returns expectable from gymnastic bands when their gung ho frontmen fuck up their chops. Band are no strangers to crowdfunding; they should bit the bullet and go fully studio

^ I agree 100% with the full studio take. It’s literally what their guitarist has already decided he’s doing.

Depends on you really. We all know Rody have problems with his vocals chords. I've seen gigs with playback. In the heat of the moment, you won't care.

Yeah it depends why you go to a gig

If you go to see flawless technicality then it’s probably not the one but if you go for drinks and dancing and singing along with a charismatic frontman I’m sure it’ll be great

I only saw them once just around Volition and it was amazing but I think they had some playback to help some of the choruses soar… didn’t care a bit!
