it's definitely the case for me. loved this band at this time and 00s emo in general and tbf that album (while not very original) contains tight bangers. very much a product of its time for me.

I didn’t get on board with this band until Beggars, then worked backward with Alchemy and Vheissu, which I had never checked. Hated Illusion and Artist in high school because of Dustin’s clean vocals and the scene around that stuff. Still don’t like them, except for some riffs on Illusion. To me those 3 are still my favorite stretch of Thrice albums. From M/M on, there are some songs I like on each one but none of the albums grab me as a whole

can we talk about how Wood and Wire is by far Dustin's best lyric ever? cos goddamn

Yeah that is a super under-appreciated song. Definitely one of the best on Beggars.

For real, I guess it plays second fiddle to Circles as far as that style on Beggars goes, but the lyrics are defs a cut above

Honestly, I prefer it to Circles. Maybe it's just the lyrics doing the heavy-lifting for me. But musically, it also really paints the scene the lyrics are conveying.

Wood and Wire, Great Exchange, title track, and Circles are my favorites on that album. That little climatic key resolution at the end of Wood and Wire is great.

The Great Exchange might straight-up be my favourite Thrice song honestly. drumming alone is unbelievable

Great Exchange is one of the worst songs on Beggars imo, but maybe it's just because its central metaphor is realllllly overplayed in Christian circles
also Artist and Vheissu both hold up super, super well, I'm not sure where people are getting this 'aged poorly' vibe...

I wasn’t raised around north american wasp protestantism or the various cultural movements associated with it so maybe that’s why it doesn’t bother me. Didn’t even notice the metaphor initially tbh

My personal preference goes Water > Fire > Air > Earth.
My exact ranking as well, sowing. Firebreather is top 3 Thrice for me. Open Water, Lost Continent and The Messenger are amazing as well.

Still, Daedelus and Silver Wings are soooo good. Sky Is Falling and Broken Lungs are also pretty great but they've kinda worn off of me
Damn, you didn’t even mention the best song on that EP. a Song for Milly.

"Great Exchange is one of the worst songs on Beggars imo, but maybe it's just because its central metaphor is realllllly overplayed in Christian circles"
Lol how can a Christian call imputed righteousness an 'overplayed metaphor'? That's the crux of everything you believe, its what bought you eternal life. It's like complaining that Christians talk about Jesus too much.
Unless you're not a Christian, if so kindly ignore that haha

As far as Artist goes, I think it’s a really solid album, like a 3.7/3.8 basically. But not quite as good as people trump it up to be.
As far as I’m concerned, Vheissu and Major/Minor are masterpieces and their two best albums. Fire/Water and Beggars are next.

Regarding The Great Exchange, the metaphor is the captain dying for the mutinous crew. The theological claim that it is a metaphor for might be central to Christian belief (although as a metaphor it seems compatible with a broader range of atonement/soteriological theories than just imputed righteousness) but that particular metaphor isn't central.

my bad y'all, I was thinking specifically of the "your body is a bridge" line, and the whole Jesus-as-bridge metaphor being pretty trite (and I'm a Christian)
but looking back, that line occupies way less of the song than I thought, so I'm in the wrong here
|
| |
No worries, I mistakenly thought you were referring to the theology behind it as I haven't really heard the mutinous crew metaphor used often, especially in music. Apologies! Jesus-as-Bridge is a lot more trite :-)
