I only checked one of their tunes, think it was 'Like Life to the Flies' or some shit. Honestly wasn't too bad. Might check this out for the hell of it.

sorry, i thought it made it clear that i think the album is decent and i didn't say the choruses are objectively bad.
|
| |
Just subjectively bad then.

I think I prefer the likes of Scattering the Ashes which at least is fun than some of the other cuts which are neither catchy nor heavy

I'm just sick of people calling everything with a focus on clean melody "pop" as if it was a bad thing tbh

im just sick of people calling trivium a good thing

Been blasting this album on loop all day and it just keeps getting better on each listen.

It does annoy me how when bands like Trivium release a "heavier" song (ie Amongst the Shadows) everyone goes mental regardless of whether it's actually any good or not

...and their poppier songs just automatically get flak. I think their best songs are somewhere in between (eg The Defiant, Catastrophist)

Their best songs are on Shogun and Ascendancy you scrub.

"I'm just sick of people calling everything with a focus on clean melody "pop" as if it was a bad thing tbh"
you'd have a point if it was still 2006 and dweebs still actually talked like that.

Heard all but the last couple tracks thus far. Definitely not as good as TSATS but this is enjoyable. Could definitely be a grower

I seem to remember the best Shogun song being Into the Mouths of Hell but I'm a fake metal fan so

That's probably my favorite solo by them, but the solos on Shogun are all pretty insane.

The greatest Trivium song is actually on In Waves - Caustic are the Ties that Bind.
That said, I've always felt these dudes had decently high highs with a ton of mediocre material. Heafy used to be able to craft enjoyable vocal melodies and even write outside his genre (his roadrunner united songs were by far the best of the batch), but I think they found a lucrative pocket and I can't really blame them for living in it.
