If they remixed some parts of this album I would probably fall in love with it. The bad production sorta works at parts, but other times it really detracts from the songs.

I had the same outlook on the record at first, but after a while I just kind of saw it as being more unique than their other records. The low production kind of helps on songs like 'Alvin Row' when that eerie piano piece near the center surfaces and leads into cymbal crashes and screams. It's mostly the vocals that falter, because I can hear the instruments clear as day most of the time.

I think if it had a "fuller" sound too (more bass heavy I guess), it would be a lot better. I like noise, but it's mostly all just really high pitched tones.

But nonetheless, this thing has such a unique sound to it. The way they manipulated the guitars, the synth made bass parts, the brush drumming, and just the sampling they do is really interesting. It's like partly cutesy and charming, and partly terrifying and nightmarish.

Oh, and "April and the Phantom" is the fucking tits.

^This is the biggest thing the album has going for itself if you ask me. "Alvin Row" opens with uneasy static noise and leads into a creepy, dreamy piano piece, and other songs like "Chocolate Girl" come off as endearing with pretty little acoustic passages. It's an excellent shift in mood, but the high pitched tones are admittedly a little grating at times.

"April and the Phantom" is my third favorite song here.

both "chocolate girl" and "alvin row" are really really fully formed "experimental pop" songs that are really impressive for a band that's just budding. "april" takes second honors but isn't quite as good or exciting, imo. "penny dreadfuls" is also great; really emotional and stuff and avey would come back to that sort of thing on "cuckoo cuckoo" from strawberry jam (at least imo i see that as being related lol)

I don't quite hear the relation, but I agree with everything else you said - Alvin Row might be their most 'fully formed' song to date, although I don't expect many people to agree with that.

I think untitled is my favourite. I love how the juxtaposition of the piano and the noisy come together at the end.

Album is fucking brilliant

4.5 epic. La Rapet and Bat You'll Fly compliment my brain.

Like floating in a fuzzy dream. I love how every song has that peak or climax where a lovely little melody comes out. Like in Chocolate Girl, La Rapet, Bat You'll Fly, Alvin Row, pretty much everything.
