"I dig their imperfections." couldn't agree more! I'm glad you're checking this? Have you done Lore by instance?

I did check Lore, yeah. Found it a little boring to be honest. It seemed to rely a lot on the listener really liking fuzzy guitar riffs. And I do like them, but probably not enough for them to be the main selling point. Finding this new one more textured and intricate. If I keep digging it I'll probably go back and give Lore another go.

Oh there's floydish depth there trust me...but honestly that was my first opinion on Lore...only came around when I came back 2 years later.

Cool, yeah I'm sure there's depth I missed. I'm easy with these things. I don't try too hard to like something first time. Often I need to let some time pass and then try again when I sense I'll have a better appreciation for what the band were doing. Usually when something eventually clicks I realise that on my first listens I was asking it to do something that it's not aiming to do.

So far, this is probably my least favourite Elder, not counting the debut, which I haven't heard

This is more nuanced than the last LPs, but on the other side it lacks the punch of Lore or Reflections. It's not worse or better (well, it's a just a tad under the last two main efforts IMO, probably they need to hone their new shape), it's just different. I'm pretty sure it will be as polarizing as the Gold and Silver EP, given the change of direction, but so far I'm digging it a lot!
I completely agree on the general feeling about the vocals, in a few cases they stick out like a sore thumb. The timbre isn't bad per se, but the kind of performance would have been more at home with doom/stoner stuff. Here it feels a bit out of place.

Trying to be a complete mucisian is a far more important task than writing guitar riffs. I have no problem with them moving on.

Am I the only one getting some Anathema's Thin Air impression when listening to One Light Retreating's main motif ?
