The production on this is much better than on Nightbringers too, which got loudness-war-ed to hell

I really liked Nightbringers, too.

main issue with nightbringers production was that a big chunk of the low mids is carved out, which i've noticed is an issue with several jacob hansen produced albums (demons by bloodshot dawn, necrotic manifesto by aborted, evolution of chaos by heathen, ect)

Nightbringers was definitely a grower and I love that album now, but my first impressions of this are definitely worse than that of Nightbringers. It's definitely a decent album but the first two tracks are boring, especially Godlessly which is one of the most forgettable tracks by Black Dahlia I've heard since Abysmal, which was unfortunately full of them. Removal of the Oaken Stake, Child of Night and Sunless Empire are all great. Leather Aprons Scorn is okay but I can't imagine revisiting it much. How Very Dead and The Wereworms Feast are good, but the vocals on Wereworms Feast sound really weird for some reason. Dawn of Rats is a great closer, but not on par with The Lonely Deceased as a closer. Overall, I'm underwhelmed but I hope it's a grower like Nightbringers, otherwise I would probably rank this with Abysmal as one of their lesser efforts.

The Lonely Deceased is one of the best songs they've ever written, alongside Miasma. These dudes have a knack for putting some of the most killer songs last. Abysmal is probably their most mediocre album, I personally found this one to be much better than that. Either way I salute you General.

I'm usually one for bands sticking to their tried and true sound for the most part... But I wouldn't mind if these guys started experimenting more.

I feel like you could take any random song from this album, drop it into another one of their last 5 or so albums, and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I feel bad knocking these guys because they're so consistent. But truthfully, I think I'm just getting a bit bored with their formula. It feels like it's barely changed since Nocturnal.

Sucks that this isn't landing for some of you.

I have to respectfully disagree with the notion that you could take any song off this album and put it on any of their other records, though. I think 'The Wereworm's Feast' is a prime example of them being a bit more experimental, especially in Trevor's case in terms of flexing his vocal style a bit more. I'd actually like to see them expand a bit more on that on their next release.

But for me, the addition of Brandon Ellis has allowed them to take their already consistently good sound to another level.

The solo on 'Sunless Empire' is the best solo on the album, IMO. Seems to maintain a nice semblance of both style and substance. Love the melodic approach, while still allowing him to shred a bit. He just seems to possess enough of a balance in his writing to truly give his sound a nice variety and cohesiveness.

Said it before, but really happy with this album. Probably my favorite of the year so far.

this is probably their most different sounding album as is tbf. thrashier, a bit slower, generally a bit less ATG influence

This is dull as fuck and I'm not a fan of Brandon Ellis' lead work. He's clearly a great guitarist but it just doesn't fit the band.

the closer is really strong but the rest is pretty standard BDM. a good band but they've never been more than that to me.
