The production really is the biggest problem, strip all that away and you've got a passable if a bit bland garage rock record that probably would've been praised if it was released by some dumb indie band that RYMers or Sputnikers wank to.

tbh if you're blaming a veteran major label act's creativity or band chemistry issues on prod, mixing or audibility, especially if they're a sodding power trio with ultrasimple arrangements, you need to pull that wool off your eyes and listen to some fucking lofi until you've detoxed from holding that shit to the standards of whatever polished radiotrash is supposed to sound like

Because plenty of bland records get wanked over on sites like this and nobody bats an eye when it's part of some nebulous indie aesthetic. Album is okay I guess, not really worth getting angry over.

lol if you're gonna play a nebulous af relativity game over indie records on this plane of halfassery that the site beats it to, you're gonna have to name names

i remember when it came out, Better Oblivion Community Center immediately got hit with a 5-star review, and staff giving it a 4.4. i sort of like bright eyes to a degree (desaparecidos is oberst's better project tho) and like a bit of phoebe bridgers' work but that didn't really do a lot for me, i put that around a 3 as well like what i've got this at. that's got a 3.6.

and yeah, if the national released something like this i'd expect at worst, mixed reviews.
