I love it when people diss shit from the '90s for being insensitive to gay people. I read an article recently slamming Friends for being homophobic, was a good laugh.

"cuz like, MOP referenced Ru Paul in a positive light on the new Gang Starr so you know
times a changin"
well thank god we're moving in a positive direction, was worried for a second there
|

@gyro lol ok but are you refuting that 90s hip hop was massively homophobic tho?
Obviously doesnt stop me from listening to it but forreal
I get looking for that in shit like FRIENDS is obnoxious but those two demographs are hardly the same

Definitely don't refute that at all, and I just mentioned friends because it's relevantish and fresh in my mind. Don't think it was okay but think it's dumb how many people choose to get offended by stuff from 3 decades ago (not you) and judge it by today's standards and culture
|
| |
is it that people are getting "offended" by it or is it that in retrospect people are becoming better at re-evaluating older media themes, coding and behaviours that we now realise are actually problematic?
|

Friends is offensively inoffensive if anything

Yeah that's actually shocking

The people who would find curb offensive are the types that are too anti-semitic to watch the show to begin with
|

i'm anti-cementic

"is it that people are getting "offended" by it or is it that in retrospect people are becoming better at re-evaluating older media themes, coding and behaviours that we now realise are actually problematic?"
No it's just that people's justifiable loss of purpose in today's world means there's not much to do other than bicker and fight with each other for the most insignificant things as well as create some tragic narrative of supposed suffering in order to invalidate their own lack of meaning in their lives
"Pretty sure it's that people are overly sensitive pussies."
and basically this
|
| |
so thats what you were doing with the whole daisy ridley thing
|
| |
you mean the thread where you fucked off the second I mentioned your hypocrisy on the matter
|
| |
Are people still discussing if this dude is homophobic when he's friends with people like Elton John? Wasn't that one of his biggest headlines of his career when he did a duet with him?
|
| |
i'm not homophobic, i know some gay dudes
|
| |
you mean the thread where you fucked off the second I mentioned your hypocrisy on the matter
I mean thats the entire reason why it's funny to tease you about it yeah
i guess you took it seriously

lmao no one is out there fighting in the streets over Friends, no one's calling for anyone's head or saying "don't watch fucking FRIENDS" it's literally just people re-examining things in a different light and understanding that certain things can be problematic, especially when in the 90s a lot of gay people's representation in the mainstream was as the butt of a joke they weren't in on. No one is saying something like Friends as a whole was homophobic, or even that instances of homophobia were intentional, it's literally just people pointing out a couple of things that are like, maybe kinda a strong 7 on the yikes scale
|
| |
Yeah, I get that's a thing but he's gone on record supporting gays marrying and that he doesn't have a problem with them. Doesn't make it ok to say slurs and he's dumb in that regard but I don't think he's legitimately homophobic in terms of anything past shock value for his music.
