especially since it works so well with everything else they're doing

I agree, it's all the dark jazz bands interspersed with metal, and it doesn't seemed forced or BTBAM Colors-style bait and switch. What's the problem.

not troubled by it, just feel that it's just.... there. doesn't really add a whole lot to the album for me, sounds cool tho

Check the debut if you haven't. It's less "explorative" but the sax actually blends better imo, just jam the song Deviant Shapes.
In this new album the dark jazz is both expanded and more interlude-ish at the same time.

I love the way they use it on this one though. Interludes really help the album to breathe.

I basically made an entire song based on the jazz sections of this. I would’ve used sax, but I don’t have a good sax in any sample library

Yes I do appreciate the straight dark jazz intros, but I don't completely like how they treated the sax during the heavy parts this time. It has much less clarity and is mixed too distant to have a true impact (see 5:00 into Uncanny Delusions, the mix is such a mess there), and I think its playing at times feels even more constrained than the debut.
Take the section 1:45~3:40 from Black Silent Piers, blending-wise there's nothing like that in this one in my opinion.

Yup. Still amazing.

Need to find some live footage. Curious to see if/how the jazzy parts are live.

Band rules. I like Ihsahn but I think White Ward are utilizing sax in a better way.

Less entertaining than Futility Report but still I'm proud they are from my country. Ukraine.

The way the noirish atmosphere recedes a bit but never quite disappears underneath the more black metal oriented sections is so sweet. Really helps the flow.
Record ought to be about 20 minutes too long, but never winds up feeling that way

it's good

Oh yeah it's gooood.
