But yet you were able to play it 20 times X) some listens we rate high could become unbearable...I guess its smooth/ soothing nature provides that.

I like Lateralus over Aenima, but Undertow over this (ever so slightly). I don't go into every Tool album expecting the very same thing, and some of their albums have more success at being what they are than others at being what they aim at. Although I definitely see why Aenima fans would dislike what they were going for here, but that's not my "problem" with this (hard to call it a problem when so much of this is great to amazing).

The thing is, there are a bunch of things I don’t like about this album.
The interludes, invincible, and maynard’s lack of intense vocals.
But I still have it a 4.5 because despite all of that there is like 60 minutes of great music here I like, Tool’s sound just works for me, it’s incredibly interesting and cerebral songwriting. It’ll never be a 5 for me in a world where Aenima and Lateralus exist though.
The things Pots hates about this are things I love about it, so I guess that’s just subjectivity in action. I personally love the production here - to me it’s their 3rd best production job.
From a production standpoint I’d go
Aenima
Lateralus
This
Undertow
10K days
They’re all very well engineered and mixed technically speaking and much more organic than most modern rock albums. 10K day’s has a high presence high gain guitar amp blended it that just bothers me a little so I dropped it down. I forget which one they added.
Jones used to use a rectifier/VH4/superbass blend and then later on switched to dual VH4s plus the super bass. 10K days uses one of the producer’s amps in the mix

Invincible is basically a one song summary of everything I dislike about Tool, which I guess is why it makes sense that it's a lot of people's fave ehh

I might bump it when I feel like listening to it front to back once more, which hasn't happened for like a week. Which is a bad sign. It remains a strong 3.5 for now and I'm confident with that.

Invincible to me is an example of a song where I understand what people are complaining about with Tool. It’s overlong and doesn’t grab me at any point. IMO one of the weakest songs in their discography

People underwhelmed by this band should really see a live show from them nowadays. Too bad those tickets fly too quickly.

They’re coming to my town this year, but the tickets are super expensive. Now with the baby I don’t know that I can justify the expense. I’ve seen them live a couple of times before though

I’ve heard some people complain about the lyrics of Invincible but Maynard could sing pretty much anything and I would enjoy it if he delivered with a great melody or great intensity. Case in point prison sex or hooker with a penis. I just think the melodies are too flat and direct on Invincible and musically the band doesn’t make up for it as well as they do elsewhere on the album. But hey, it’s not a Rosetta stoned level bad vocal performance though.

Also the heavy chugging parts are just crying out for a big vocal climax
