regular commenters matter more than the silent users lol. twfm is the decade favorite of people who actually participate on the site

Ghost Reveries is by far the best Opeth so I'm not sure we see eye to eye here talons

You could discount the vast majority of users on sputnik like that just because they're not part of the social aspect of the site, but you're only going to be left with a revolving door of like 100-200 main people as far as I can tell. The number of ratings is more compelling and representative of the fanbase as a whole if we're talking about the what's considered their best.
I see pretty equal distribution of opinions on what their best album is, so even out of that small pool, TWFM isn't the clear favorite. It just has a lower average than their classics so its defenders are going to sing its praises louder. For example like I do with SWB, if the average was a little higher, I wouldn't say so often how it's their best since HV. We all just want to be heard!

I was basing my comment on regular users too, I would say Boxer is the strongest consensus album with High Violet as a close second. Alligator thread does not get as many bumps these days. TWFM gets a lot but that’s because it was the most recent album for a full 4.5 years so it was the default for a good long time. That’s probably why it seems like a favorite but if you consider what people actually say Boxer/HV/Alligator are clearly the faves. There’s a smaller, very vocal minority that we can call the “Alligator stans” who rate that significantly higher than the others but I think most prefer Boxer or HV these days. Also I feel like the majority of those who rate TWFM 4.5+ also rate at least one of the previous three the same or higher; the same does not apply the other direction.

My perception of the site consensus, based on my 10+ years here, is:
Boxer > High Violet > Alligator > Trouble Will Find Me > Sleep Well Beast > the rest
It's probably clear that Alligator has faded and TWFM has grown though, based on recency bias and other factors.

Here's your best answer though (scroll to macman's "by the numbers" feature):
https://www.sputnikmusic.com/blog/2018/07/01/sputstaff-top-10-national-songs/
The chart clearly displays rating trends and my blurb describing the chart is in essence a TL;DR for the data.

A lot of the staff are Alligator stans which is reflected in that post, I don’t think that’s representative of general usership though.

The chart is representative of the entire userbase. mac swept the site data.
The top half is staff representative, mac's "by the numbers" were always a site-wide representation.

the "Trve Fan Ratings" is also an interesting perspective; it ranks the discogs only by users who have rated every single album in the band's discography (aka no one-off ratings where someone rated Boxer a 4 and then never bothered again, etc)
|

Album Rating: 4.0
We’re trying to consider active usership only though, Mac’s data only show what was indisputably obvious. Basically I’m saying active users tend to agree with general Natty consensus except they rate Alligator a bit lower on average. Trve fans are still going to include a lot of silent users.

Right, active users are more likely to gravitate towards newer albums because generally speaking active users are younger (only a percentage of oldheads stick around).

yh this. TWFM is a more recent favourite. love that album but I will fight you in a pig pen if you tell me it's considered better than HV. HV was one of the biggest albums on this site I've ever seen
