It's true Periphery have these specific types of songs like the pop punky one (Smiles), the br00tal metalcory one (Eagle), the anthemic metalcory one (Marigold) etc. These tropes didn't change much over their career so far. But the songs on P3 just don't really grab me while the ones on P4 do. It's like the songs here are more direct or have better writing. P4 just has a certain something P3 is missing imo, while you're right that there are huge similarities. It's a matter of execution. I dig some songs off P§ though like Lune

The crux of my point is that both albums should either have the same average of 3.4, or the same average of 3.7. I dont see why there is such a divide between averages, as both at times are so similar I feel robbed and I'm listening to the same album over again, just with a different coat of paint (it's another reason why I see Juggernaut as their best album due to its uniqueness, but I digress)

But that's the thing, it's not like the same album with different paint, it's more like albums of different quality with similar paint lul. The difference in average is justified imo

kalk take your point and flip it around, that's me, I think the songwriting as a whole on P3 is far superior to that of P4, execution, everything. The only 1 up this has over P3 imo is Reptile

soundoff by catdragons for P4 I tend to agree with,

"The only standout part is the ending section of Reptile, and the other tracks just aren't that interesting enough to grant a higher score. Mediocre--some insulting--materials with some glistenings here and there. Would've given 3 if Smiles wasn't so offensively poppy and ruined previous four tracks"

I think one big thing for me is the vocals. They're more memorable on this one imo, better hooks and melodies, better tone etc. Seems like your experience with this is entirely different though

As someone who's not a big Periphery fan, agree with everything kalk said. Better songwriting, better vocals, more cohesive, flows nicer. Also this has Reptile. That being said, I don't think P3 is their worst so I'm not sure why it holds that title here.

Smiles is so good because structurally it doesn't try to be anything other than a well-crafted pop song. And to that end it succeeds as its endlessly catchy with great vocals and genuine emotion behind it (given the story behind the song). The band shoehorning pop choruses into the middle of heavy djent songs is exactly what turns so many people off them as it's often awkward and feels cheap and sell-outy

Smiles is an awkward outlier in the album, it would have been a better fit as a spiritual successor to The Summer Jam, on a Clear EP 2 of sorts. I said on this thread previously that I think that is what they should have done instead of P4, and then released a concept album revolving around the story of Reptile a couple years later.

As much as I tend to agree about Reptile being the best song here, I don't think songs like Satellites, It's Only Smiles or Sentient Glow are too far off. After the first song there is still plenty to look forward to and Reptile was the best choice for the opening spot off all the songs here.

Also I don't think Smiles is an outlier at all tbh, the album needed something different to shake things up halfway through the album and Smiles just does the job perfectly. Satellites kind of mirrors the cleaner more melodic tone, so it actually feels like Smiles does belong here.

If anything, I would have preferred this album to have a bigger Meshuggah influence rather than all these weird detours of soft soundscapes etc. Listening to Blood Eagle as first single, one would expect this whole album to be really heavy etc. but it's just not, and that's kind of disappointing. Especially since they left Sumerian to make the album "they wanted" when it is a literal mirror of P3 bar a couple exceptions.

The original Sentient Glow is better.

A whole album like Reptile would be incredible

But the rest of this thing is either mediocre or awful (Eg smiles)

The reason people don't like P3 is because Catch Fire and Marigold are awful. Also Remain Indoors is pretty goddamn boring. Other than that its pretty solid and Motormouth is an absolute monster of a track

Marigold is their biggest song, and it's not bad at all, I would say it is a pretty good song

I am giving tough love to my favorite band, this album is treading water, and they could achieve so much more.
