This is a lot more serious than Deconstruction for sure. Both lyricly and musically.

I think Why? might be my favorite track at this point. I would really love a full album of that style if done as good as this.

Honestly, ZTO, Dark Matter and this one have paved the way for him to write a stage musical. Just do it Devin, it's the next logical step!

"yeah its no more crazy than deconstruction"

That's pretty objectively untrue. As Gmork said, Deconstruction was a straightforward metal album (even if straightforward metal in Devy's world is a bonkers affair) but this isn't even a metal album half the time.

I don't see the "straightforward" part of Planet of the Apes, Mighty Masturbator and the t/t. But I agree that Deconstruction was at least predictable in that it was consequent in its chaotic nature. This one is chaotic at times, but colorful and bright at the same time, which makes it all the weirder.

@sitar

i guess you and i take bonkers to mean different things and therein lies the confusion

cuz i wasnt talking about variety but complexity and technicality

Can someone change the album cover of this to the one with the whale.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, I rarely talk about the technicality of metal albums cos everyone's a ridiculous virtuoso these days. But this is one of the most stylistically ridiculous albums I've ever heard.

I would have been WAY more interested in 'Z2' if it sounded like this. I enjoyed 'Epicloud' because of individual songs, but it can be tiring. That sound got REAL old on 'Sky Blue' for some reason, and on that entire album, I can only discern two songs; the rest just blend together. 'Transcendence' took that wall-of-sound style in a more serious, less bombastic direction, and turned into probably my second-favorite DTP album (behind 'Addicted').

But something's different here. The production is definitely better. The songs each have so much individual character! And there's only 10 of them, which makes them easier to remember, in my opinion. Everything I both love and hate about Devin is here, but luckily I love way more than I hate, so I love the album way more than I hate it so far.

To be clear, Devin is one of the musicians I respect most in the world. I think he's a musical genius, but sometimes musical genius doesn't always translate to enjoyment. Still, this is nice.

How this compares to Ocean Machine? I know it's a weird question, but I need the insight.

Doesn't really sound anything like it, not very 'song" oriented, plays more like a musical but still has a lot of standout moments. I'm an ocean machine fanboy, I wouldn't put it on that level of emotional impact at this point, nothing like Bastard or Death of Music, but its very entertaining and creative/beautiful.

''Sounds like you only like the mellow Devy, which if anything means that you don't like variety because this is the most varied album he has ever put out.''

Odd conclusion, but no. I like most of the stuff he's done, including the SYL stuff. If I want to listen to 'wacky' album of his, I'd rather turn on Infinity or something.

I get why people aren't into this tbh. It really is all over the place and inconsistent af, but to me that's something that Devy's mastered for a long while.
