First song has some great layers, I just can't fuck with his lyrical delivery on this album. Rivers is 48 and reflecting at least a little maturity in those years would be nice. Lines like "I work hella harder!" are just so so lame.

I was inspired to listen to blue album last night, album still kicks ass

Giving this a listen now... Everytime a track is rubbing me the right way it grows off me before it even ends lol

This might have less replay value for me than pacific daydream, ye...

Is there something else as good as High as A Kite on here?

There's some good stuff on here, but overall it just sounds like a paradoy of Weezer. Everything is just really overproduced, too clean, it's overall sound just to me always seems like something is off.

That sounds like Blink's California, and that scares me. I wanna listen to this at some point, but not I'm not too excited yet

I think the California comparison is accurate.

It's like Blink's California, but less sincere.

Didn't want to comment but

"That goes to show that even doused in black point..."

Is that supposed to be "black paint"

No one said this was california, simply that this is their version of blink's california: a very polished yet watered down sound.

no i know but in concept i still don’t hear california

this doesn’t sound like a band desperate trying to recapture their old sound and youth which is what cali is in idea and execution. this feels more original it sounds watered down but they’re not watering down their old sound they’re more trying to fit thsemselves in others sometimes well sometimes not

'god doof you really have a talent for stifling discussion of literally anything you don't like, I guess everyone's gotta be good at somethin'

Well, the comment was - I want something good to come out and get a big discussion thread so I don't have to keep sh'tting on every 2019 album that gets noticed here.

So I'm as frustrated with the situation as you ;P

This is a good review! I have to admit that I was wrong in my initial reaction –– this really is the counterpart to White that it needed to be. I see a lot of ado being made about Rivers' formulaic approach to songwriting, and a lot of ire reserved particularly for his legendary spreadsheets. To be honest, though, part of the joy in post-Pinkerton Weezer (to me, at least) is in locating the feelings buried beneath Rivers' platonic idea of The Song (because they're there), and reconciling them with the messiness at large. There's a disaffected wandering pathos here that's kind of endearing. Also, Rivers' lyrics seem pretty concentrated on meaning-making. He's managed to fashion a self-conscious art that invites the critical equivalent of the pay-what-you-want model, and it's so damn compelling. And fun. It's not terribly original, I guess, but it feels genuine in spite of its fuck all vision. Plus, you're right, the production is so sleek, the kind of meticulous attention to little details that I'd expect from a Spoon album. I dunno, I love Blue and Pinkerton and all, but I find myself revisiting recent Weezer much more frequently than the early stuff. They've had a great run since Everything Will Be Alright (it bugs me that criticism of Pacific Daydream almost always begins and ends at Feels Like Summer), and I've never been more content as a fan of this band.

Just wanted to share some thoughts.

Yeah, it’s more cringe here than it’s ever been, and it’s on one of the best songs. Whyyyyy?
