As if I'm actually enjoying this.

Is this actually as good as the RYM average seems to suggest?
RYM is pretty accurate. I'd put it between TOT and Octa too. Just a hair worse than six degrees

LaBrie has had some great lyrics in the past. Blind Faith, Disappear, Sacrificed Sons, Part of Octavarium, Vacant etc. I'm just glad (from the sounds of it) his contribution hasn't been limited to just the album ballad and nothing else.
he actually has had his moments, Vacant especially. it's just funny to me that they used to chuck him one song per album and now he's the one I look forward to most because Petrucci's lyrics have spiralled into absolute shit - I mean how does the dude who wrote Metropolis Pt 1 get this low

Maybe the older lyrics have always been garbage too

Damn this got me hyped, don't let me down baby!
"A song about an alcoholic who spends his days at a bar contemplating his life choices" - I wonder if any of this is related to Portnoy and his recovery suite?
Also, is 'Out of Reach' a reference to the lyric in 'The Bigger Picture' from the s/t "...Falling in and out of reach"?

Super solid album, I dig the heaviness of it

the bonus song is still like "WHAT!" to me. pretty good album overall, more experiment, yet Mangini still lack of nuance! Barstool & S2N are soul of this album

I love the bonus track, it's a groovy monster. Maybe they should do more in that Deep Purple vein
|
| |
Intro riff to 'Barstool Warrior' is 'About to Crash'
|

Okay, this is definitely their best since 6 Degrees.

This is the first album since 6 Degrees where I feel like they really tried something different and let loose

Heard this through once. Will give it a few more spins before I rate but I'm really liking it so far! definitely better than the last 2. Lots of groove for DT!

Album Rating: 3.5
For DT standards, it's an okay album, but if another band made it would be one of their best, so that's where I am with this, Octavarium, BC&SL, ToT etc. all stomp on this
|
| |
I didn't have the opportunity to check this album yet. From what I know, the opinions are divided. I'm curious about it. I hope that DT have made something different and more creative than the same formula used on their last albums.

They do some new interesting things, while also blending their older sound; album is a nice mix of creative and nostalgic in a good way.
Out of Reach sounds like an I&W track and I love it.

It's even worse when you consider how good of a lyricist he was as far back as the debut with tracks like The Killing Hand.

"Octavarium, BC&SL, ToT etc. all stomp on this"
Agreed. After two listens I also think this is not as good as ADTOE, which I know I liked more than most.
|

Even as recently as In the Name of God, Petrucci wrote monster lyrics. How does he just lose this ability?
|
| |
wait so this is actually good
haven't enjoyed these guys since the mid-2000's
|
| |
Album Rating: 3.1
it's getting rated a bit higher than it should because it's not as outright awful as their last three, but yeah it's not too bad
let's bear in mind TOT has As I Am which is in strong contention for the worst DT lyrics... with Dark Eternal Night obviously
