Blackened is pretty amazing.

it's like the quintessential alternate picking guitar riff, only it's played with down-strokes because Hetfield is ridiculous.

I love the drumming. Despite what people will say about metallica. Lars had some beastly drum moments on this album.

On their Grammy award nominated 4th LP '...And Justice for All', Metallica ambitiously infuse their technical brand of thrash-metal with even greater intricacy & complexity than before. Verging on being an outright progressive metal release, it is a natural evolution for a young band who have always looked to challenge themselves. The 1st full-length release to feature bassist Jason Newsted, there are some production issues evident & the album is undoubtedly a track too long... But otherwise, this is a consistent LP that also happens to contain "one" of the quartet's greatest songs. Recommended Tracks: One, Dyers Eve, Blackened & ...And Justice for All.

...And Justice for All is the best release by Metallica. It just edges out Master of Puppets for the spot. I would place this album in my Top 5 for the best thrash metal albums of all time.
This album is the total opposite of their most recent release Death Magnetic.
Hetfield's vocals are the strongest here and they would continue to be strong until 1993. There was a drastic change in his vocals from 1986-1988. He must have hit puberty late.
Lars Ulrich's drumming is top notch on this album. He was never the most technical drummer but he shows his chops here for sure. Dyers Eve, And Justice for All, and The Shortest Straw are standouts here.
Kirk Hammett showcases his most technically impressive solos on this album. The Shortest Straw has Kirk's best solo out of any Metallica song. The song itself is one of the best by Metallica.
The only bad thing that can be said about this album is that newcomer Jason Newsted is buried in the mix. Metallica was never a 'bass' band but compared to the band's other releases the bass suffers on this album. That said the tone of the guitars and the crispiness of the drums are perfection.
This album has it all. Pure thrash aggression, roaring vocals, melody, powerful lyrics, fantastic solos, and excellent drumming.
It's a shame Metallica did not play all of these songs in their prime. It would not be the same hearing these songs live today.
Top 3 Songs:
The Shortest Straw
Blackened
Dyers Eve
Top 3 Solos:
The Shortest Straw
One
Dyers Eve

Some top songs. Some not quite cutting it. Weirdly I find it lacks atmosphere and sounds a bit dull nowadays. Still good though.
