To this day, Gates of Babylon is the song that I remember most vividly where I was, with whom and my reaction the first time I heard it. m/

Bands classic material is a solid 4 thing. Rising could be a 4.5 though

Honestly Dio was just a fucking gift to the world, let alone metal. So many people should have died so he could have lived.

Personally this band are so weird to hear now, in a good way. It’s like listening to a ‘best of’ compilation of deeply nostalgic classic rock through a different lens - some of their material wasn’t even ‘Rainbow’ to me, because I couldn’t pinpoint it definitively being them. (Context: heard a ton of Rainbow ‘2nd hand’ in my youth via my mum in particular).
P.S. Gates of Babylon is fire.

The album is fine, but Gates kicks in and takes it up like 3 levels at once - until that point it seems a little uninteresting compared with the last 2 albums.

Yeah she does, anyone who digs Opeth is good by me, ha. Just could’ve maybe realised earlier that 70s rock wasn’t just for old folk. Stupid teenage biases.
Having said that the title track is catchy, but in that ‘annoying chorus playing constantly in your head forever’ kind of way which makes me never want to hear it again. I guess having heard in 2nd hand many times before isn’t helping.

That's probably it. It's supposed to be the hit anthem from the album so I think it fits. Catchy and uplifting. Sensitive to Light and L.A. Connection are the only songs in here which aren't a 5 for me

Not that big on L.A. Connection either. Gates/King though? Damn impressive. I just think the first two albums are more consistent, in fact it’s hard to find fault with Rising at all, unless you find the brief length to be particularly irksome.

I think this one has some quite underrated material tho.
Lady of the Lake imo has one of the best vocal performances of Dio
The Shed is hard riffing and pounding. Like what you'd listen to if you wanted to feel like a badass walking on the streets
And Rainbow Eyes is a beautiful, heart felt ballad that shows how Dio could pretty much sing anything

L.A. Connection is bad cuz he says title a milion times

Not bad, just kinda repetitive. Vocals still rule and the backing piano fits pretty well
