Voivod, if you give it more listens you'll realize how many times they stray out of the pattern and then come back to it super quick. At first listen it seems they are always on the same horse but they actually change things here and there, it's really subtle though.

I have never had this experience with any of Voivod's albums, to be honest. That said, I'm enjoying the guitarwork here. The rhythms are somewhat lackluster. I'll see how it develops later on.

Sorry I was referring to Voivod (the man himself). Should have phrased that better.

I just realized that, wow.
Anyway, I just got past Silhouette Usurper and it was pretty middle of the road. Scarecrow and Spectre is proving to be better though.

This is alright but kind of disappointing. They get closer to black/thrash on this but if I wanted black/thrash with eerie melodies and diverse composition, stuff like Karisma already exists. It gets better towards the end but by then, it's too little too late.

If you want something better than Havok, maybe listen to the albums preceding this.

Park if you want smth more thrash, clean sound, progression, check their debut. If you want a blackened version with less progression check this one.
And for me these guys are the best of the pack (Havok, etc) by a long shot.

Dewinged, do you prefer the first or second half of this? Because on review, the second is definitely more of a step up.

I love the opener, but the last 3 tracks is where the meat is imo. My favourites are Angel Famine and Husk. The closer is the heaviest track of the album for me.

That's sort of where this album kind of falls flat for me. The last thing that you expect for a band like this is to have most of the substance on the last handful of tracks.
|
| |
The placement is weird I agree, those are strong tracks so they could have distributed them better, specially Husk since it's probably the only track that works on a different tempo.
