Nah I think the text adds a nice contrast to the bland color scheme of the art itself. Fits pretty well imo

"Near is good but does it compare to the best Slowdive tracks? Not really."
I don't think it's fair to compare 'Near' to the best of Slowdive, but to do so anyway, I would say that Deafheaven tops Slowdive hands down in production. Production has always been a strength of Deafheaven since Sunbather and this new album continues that trend imo.
And I don't think it's even fair to compare based on the context of OCHL overall. 'Near' as a stand-alone track is definitely not as interesting as Slowdive's best tracks, but I think it serves as a perfect segmentation between the 1st half of the album, containing two very straight-forward Deafheaven tracks (Honeycomb & Canary Yellow), and the 2nd half, containing Deafheaven's most atmospheric and melodic songwriting to date.

The artwork wouldn't be so bad if they didn't use the terrible font colors.

^ said this in the news thread: 'Near + Glint is so fucking good. should just stick to song interludes instead of every fucking song having a 3-5 minute random jam bullshit'
next post: '.... and then ofc Glint starts to drag onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn'

lol right? I feel the way this one is produced to be more about the atmosphere than the riffs really hurt the actually metal side of the music. The guitars don't sound as forceful so when they actually come in for a large part of Glint they don't have any impact. Anything off Judah sounds more powerful than that.

fucking a bro, NB and this try so hard to get that atmospheric element on every song, but all it is is just shitty wahwah and detuned solos or repetitive chugachuga.

Black Metal has only shown me how inbetween Deafheaven are. I'd rather just go listen to straight post-rock or straight Black Metal the likes of Altar of Plagues or Krallice.
But that's okay, you kids go enjoy your super meaningful music.

Those are not examples of straight anything. Krallice specifically since they all wibbly wobbly.

I want to like this more than I do. But for me, about 40 minutes of this is just a snooze fest.

Yeah, Glint may be their greatest song they’ve done. It’s like a bigger, beefier, Vertigo. The intro is seriously almost too good. And the segment from 3:45 to 4:25 is one of my favorite music moments in recent memory. That reverberated scream at the end of that segment is orgasmic as hell
