The past 3 years have produced a few of my fav albums ever when I really think about it. Idk if I see that happening this year.

2000-2009 is still quite a lot better, in my opinion. Some excellent material was released this decade but the sheer volume of great stuff released from 2000 alone could challenge this whole decade for me.

I didn’t start really getting into music until like 2005 and didn’t start getting knowledge of shit until I started using this site so I missed a few years lol.

I realized at least two albums from most of my favorite bands, Radiohead, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, The National, Sigur Ros, QotSA, Deftones, Tool/APC, Brand New, Thrice, Ulver, Isis, maudlin of the Well/Kayo Dot, Agalloch, and Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica were all released in the 00s so that's pretty impressive haha. For all the great music in this decade too, there just aren't as many 5/5 classics like all those.

I thought this year had been pretty epic. But yeah this is album of the year without a doubt. One of the top of the decade.

Is there anything excellent released this year besides this and ambient electronic like Oneohtrix Point Never and Jon Hopkins? That's the kind of music I see flourishing recently.

I just don’t understand thinking this is one of the best of the decade already lol. Like it’s not even officially out and to me it’s downright bad idk I wish I could see what you guys see in it.

idk man most fans appear to think this is their second or third best and a step up from New Bermuda. Obviously not everyone, all their releases are divisive, but the evidence is there especially with the rating average on here and RYM.

waiting for hawks to explain how it's bad instead of just repeating that over and over

Well I’ve listened to it 6 times. Probably 20+ on Near alone. Glint is probably my next favorite and had plenty of plus too. I’m about to start it again in the gym. I can tell this will be one of my favorites of all time. Sunbather had this same feeling when I first listened and now I still have it in heavy rotation.

What I find most enticing is that, like Sunbather, it kinda throws genres out the window. New Bermuda, while good, kinda stuck to the formulaic Black Metal approach, as if they were trying to win over the elite peeps. But with this album they basically raised their middle finger and did whatever they wanted and kept it feeling moreso like an indie album with very little metal and it paid off heaps. This is the most confident they’ve ever sounded. This sounds to me like the perfect progression from Sunbather.

It's Deafheaven, he doesn't have to explain anything.

In short, Deafheaven aren't good at making even remotely interesting black metal and have always been geared towards lackluster indie from the very beginning. HOW SURPRISING.

I actually explained it days ago. I simply don’t like the direction they took with it. I think it’s boring as fuck. I don’t like the “lighter” sound they went with and don’t think they pulled off the whole attempting to add alt rock experiment at all. The parts people say are supposed to draw you in I find repetitive and uninteresting. It just sounds like background music to me idk I just don’t see what’s interesting you guys so much. Canary Yellow is the only song I really dig the whole way through.

If that’s not a good enough explanation then idk what to tell you lol.
